Thanks for the clarification.

It is actually Bosch who is locking them, it is their internal bootloader programmed inside the DME. That is why BMW or any other manufacturer can not unlock them for you. ( we tried at my local BMW dealer because I know a bunch of them personally)

Safety reasons so no one can hack into the ECU to operate the self driving, cameras, all that fun stuff. It was meant to prevent a foreign country from sending out an OTA software to take over the systems. Ironic.

I heard that it was BMW who paid a huge substantial amount of money for the job of Bosch to lock the DME down tight and securely. There's a big market for aftermarket tunes on the BMW inline 6 turbo engines so BMW had to protect themselves from any warranty claims that may arise out of tuning. Other manufacturers like Porsche, Ferrari do the same but the job of locking them down is not that lucrative for the manufacturers to pay huge money on. So that's why they can be easily unlocked by aftermarket companies. I think it has changed recently with some of the newest models running the latest Bosch DMEs

And this is why there isn’t going to be a released state side unlock. You got shops making $800 just sending it to Femto. Literally making $800 just to ship something. Why the fuck would anyone want to even unlock it when you’re making that kind of money to do nothing?

Yeah I did everything myself with BM3 and the OTS map pack included it cost me $1900 but I can’t hate the shops for doing it. People are lazy so why not capitalize on it.

Sure, like I told him, get his money if people are willing to do that. Straight robbery but obviously people are paying it.

If the shop is actually taking full responsibility for the shipment and will replace your ECU if something unexpected happens, I can sort of see it being worth it to some people. Assuming you can actually trust the shop to follow through.

That said I also did it myself and the whole thing took 5 days door to door and is very simple and easy.

So how much does it cost to do a tune? 3k should cover it all? That includes dp and dp installation.

depends what you want, there's a lot of variables.

the minimum amount it will cost you is roughly $1250 for unlock and shipping both ways + $600 for BM3 with 1 OTS map, so total $1850. If you can get DP and installation for 1150 then 3k will cover it.

My DME was unlocked by FEMTO for 1 hour yesterday. Yes, I live 10 km away from FEMTO, haha. And its $625 in total for me.

However, I can't use MHD because I see the error "ROM not yet supported" in the MHD app.

I spoke with MHD support today, and they told me that the problem would be fixed within the next 14 days "its a very new software version".

I’m curious everyone that’s getting their ECU unlocked what are you all doing about updates to your car? Are you just throwing away the fact that you can never do updates for the remainder of its life?

Yes. They are useless updates anyway.

It’s not like a Tesla where you wake up with fart sounds and 100 more horsepower. What update is better than having 250hp more with an unlock?
