Lol I am inpatient person hence why I did it myself. I hate relying on middle men and it in my nature to always do things myself. This saved me time and money. Some vendors use scare tactics and making you believe if you don't use them you could risk losing you dme same as dealerships doing the same trying to upscale you things you really don't need.

why is BMW locking them all the sudden must be government regulations or something ? was the f80 locked also ? and any in the past ? can u not just wipe the ecu completely then use a copy and just load that on ? or am guessing every part that communicates with the ecu will only talk to ecu if it's speaking same language as the parts- (engine)?

Likely just legal concerns, you're inviting law suits. Companies that provided ways to break DVD encryption, and mod chips for gaming consoles etc were targets for suits. Russia seems a safe enough place to run a business that would be untouchable by the west.

These are the first ECUs to be locked in this way that I'm aware of. It's actually Bosche that implemented it (Supra uses it also in its B58). It's not that the communication is encrypted, it's using signed image validation like Secure Boot. So the ECU won't start up if the image doesn't match a known signature. There is probably a backdoor or bug that FEMTO found to allow them to neuter the signature verification. |

GM started doing this on the C7 ZR1 and carried into the C8. I believe they use Bosch ecu's as well. As far as i'm aware, no one has found a way to unlock those either and there's definitely more resources being thrown at that in the US. There was talk that GM was going to give the keys to a few chosen tuners (callaway, hennessey, lingenfelter types) but I don't think that ever came about. This is likely the new normal as new performance cars get launched.
Really, it just means people are going to create smarter piggybacks if the ECU itself is uncrackable, so it's sort of a futile battle for the OEMs. Still not clear why they don't sell unlocked ECUs that void all warranty once installed.

Replying to this to see if anyone’s got an update. If somehow there’s an unlock by spring or summer Alot of s58 owners will be happy when suns out. Anyone have updates if there’s an unlock to come in US.

Definitely would take that post with a grain of a salt unless some solid proof is released

This guy owns an old M2 Competition, engine type: S55, ECU type: MEVD172G, that doesn't even come close to modern G8x engines: S58 with MG1 ECU.

I agree. My ECU is already unlocked I already took in the fact that we will not see any domestic unlock anytime soon. Just wanted to share the post and see what you all thought.
