In the instrument cluster, when you configure the view to "route preview," it seems you only get the preview when using the navigation system to drive to a particular destination, whereas I thought the route preview would then replace the map in the cluster in general, which does not seem to be the case.

Can anyone confirm?

According to the manual "Route Preview" is only available when route guidance is active.

And 'route guidance' is basically using navigation to arrive at a specific destination, right?

Yes. 'Route guidance' is actively navigating to a destination you've inputted in the navigation system. So I suppose it makes sense to not provide you with a route preview if it doesn't know where you're going because you haven't inputted a destination into the navigation system.
