Talking Transporting Car 900 miles. Advice?

Good Morning All! I pulled the trigger on this beauty! And will be more than likely be driving her from Chicago to DC this weekend.

I have heard blue painters tape on the front end is a good way to ensure the front end doesn’t come home looking like a firing range dummy. Also have seen a product that is pretty much temporary PPF but for the track? Any advice or recommendations?

21 G82 Comp
BG/Black
8k miles!
- Exec Package
- Laser Lights
- Parking Assistance
- Just missing shadowline lights(kinda over this atm)
- Carbon trim interior(aftermarket could be the way here anyway )

Thanks!!

Congratulations!!! Very nice spec!!

There is a product called XPel Track wrap and then there is Track Armour. It’s temporary PPF.

I personal have NOT used but there were several users here who have used and were pretty satisfied!!

It’s cheap, I would do it!!

You could try blue tape but I think over 900 miles it get sticky grimy and leave some residue behind (maybe not) but I would personally try one of these clear products and just make cut outs so the car can breath.

Nice pickup!

When I take delivery, my wife and I plan to put on some early miles by driving to each of our parents (~250 miles for the weekend) and then I will be bringing it to a local shop for PPF. To make sure nothing compromises the front, rockets, crest of roof before bringing it to the shop I'm going to be buying 2 of these off Amazon and applying before I drove off the lot.
https://www.amazon.com/TrackArmour-T...99&sr=8-3&th=1

Here is the YouTube video that convinced me this was the option.

Since its specifically made to be temporary PPF that is removed shortly after application, you will have the peace of mind that the adhesive won't leave remnants on your new paint. For the extra $40 I think its worth it - just my $0.02.

I did a "Track Wrap" knock off product (less expensive) for a track weekend, and it worked fine. No issues taking it off. It looked like crap when it was on because I did such a lousy install job.

It takes more material to do than you might think.

Also, what do you intend to do with this car, drive it or store it in a climate controlled cocoon for someone else to enjoy in 20 years? IT'S JUST A CAR. Drive it. Don't fret about a few little rock chips. It's called patina. LOL

Seriously, congrats on the new car!

I bought "Armor Up" from Amazon, a roll 60" long was enough to cover the leading edge of the hood with a bit left over. The bumper would be a challenge, with all of the curves and stuff. I'm sure 100 ft. roll would be more than enough, depending of course on how wide it was.

You'll also need a cutting tool of some type, an applicator, spray bottle and a huge amount of patience.

What previous poster said, just drive it as is!

I drove ther M2CS back from Spartanburg PCD to Chicago, no issues - just make sure you dont follow trucks too closely and watch out in construction zones. Plus the car is used, it may already have some rock chips etc anyways.

Covering my car in 24 inch strips and then going through all that peeling off? I would just drive carefully and stay away from any other vehicles on the way home.

blue painter's tape works totally fine (1 inch or 2 inch). It's not pretty but it does the job, and it doesn't leave residue to be concerned about. I drove my car home nearly 600 miles in the South (heat, sun and even rain, 100mph) and had zero issues taking it off when I got home. Apply it from the first third of the hood and work your way forward overlapping the tape. Do the side mirrors, too!

Good to know! That’s what I’ll most likely end up doing, as none of the local auto stores has track wrap, or anything close, in stock.

I would recommend tracwrap too. My detail shop where I get my PPF done gave it to me for free. He also gave me largr scrap pieces of PPF as well which I applied. Was easy to take off.

^^I recall that post from another thread. I think my brother, the keeper of the tracwrap, finally found it, so I may have hope yet.

One 6"x100' is not enough. You'll need at least 2.5 - 3 rolls to cover the hood/bumper/fenders/roof.

Are you planning to PPF it? If you already have a specific shop in mind, ask them their preference. I have heard painters tape does not do much, at least that's what I was told. On the contrary, another shop recommended painters tape. I also asked about trac wrap and again the shop's concern was removing adhesive might be challenging. So speak with them in advance on preference.

Shoot good to know! Ordering two more rolls now! Who knew M cars would be so pricey!! Never had this fear with my AMG

In all seriousness very excited to go pick her up! Dealer is being a pain the ass about funds from the financing bank(in house for them) to come in before releasing the car…. Like what?! Lol

Unless there's a local specific shop you want, why not get it PPFd in Chicago before the drive home? I can recommend a couple good spots to have it done for you.

Mainly because of warranty. Generally PPFs come with a 10 year warranty. I wouldn't want to drive that far each time I want something fixed.

If you're using Xpel, as long as they are a certified installer, you can get warranty claim work done anywhere. I'm not sure about other manufacturers though.
