…. something to pass time until delivery…
Those of us getting fall deliveries who will be driving all year will have to jump into winter tires relatively quickly. I'm starting to think about which way to go with winter tires and rims. Down to 18" all around…. 19" all around ? Adjusting aspect ratio to have more of a sidewall to deal with nasty pot holes (that dent rims)? What brand rim or tire? Early I know, but rim shortages were a slight factor last year when I tried to get rims for my wife's car and could possibly be an issue this year. For those who plan to switch over what are some early thoughts? Might be of benefit to have some collective thinking!? |

I was thinking about starting this very thread
I'll get quotes later, but maybe these: G80/82/83 M3/M4 19" Style 829 Matte Black Winter Wheel/Tire Quote:
I'm also considering getting a set of snow-rated all-weather tires like the Nokian WRGs. I'm in GVA, with no real winter, but need to have snowflake-on-mountain tires past a certain point outside the metro area. If I end up back in Calgary, I don't want to have to replace the winter set while having something that approaches the performance of UHP all-seasons during the half of the year when it is too cold for summers. |

Are you all thinking of just keeping the same size? 275/35 19 ? That gives a sidewall of 3.8" ( as per online tire calculator)
Going to the 18" option that is standard on the US M3s, 275/40 18 gives you a sidewall of 4.3". However, there seems to be a lot less tire winter tire options for the 18" I don't know if the 0.5" sidewall height increase for the 18" will make a difference on pot holes. On my current winters ( 245/40 18) the sidewall is 3.8" and in two of the four years I have had them on I have had bent rims due to pot holes. Granted aftermarket rims may not be a strong as OEM's, or maybe I was just unlucky. Potholes in the Greater Toronto Area seem to be getting worse each year. |

so in theory if the base rim in US and Europe are 18s in the front, 18s square setup should work, but im leaning towards a 19s all around for better looks
getting the OEM rims are necessary and such ripoffs in general, there must be replica options by the time winter hits. Thinking michelin pilot alpine as well

Jumping in late .. busy with packing to move out soon..
I do have Michelin ice 225 /18" on my 340xi and very happy with them. Yes, I do plan to drive my M3 all year around and I'm thinking 19" all around as well. Have not decided on tires yet. I usually talk to my tire guy at tires23.

I've been happy with my last 2 sets of Pirelli Sottozero performance winters, 2 different cars. Did very well in proper Canadian winter paired with Subaru's AWD. Also did well with GVA pseudowinter on my M240 with xdrive.
I had Dunlop WinterSports on a previous car too, they were definitely squirrely on dry pavement. I'd like to see more comparisons of all-weather snowflake-rated tires with winter "performance" tires like the Sottozero and Pilot Alpins. https://www.tyrereviews.com/Article/...s-for-2020.htm

Winter Tires discussion!?!?
another often overlooked option is the Vredestein Wintrac Pro. I mounted a set on used 437m wheels for my F80. They were fantastic and I had planned to use them on my soon to ordered G8x, but alas the bolt pattern changed.
My plan is to spec the car with 824M wheels and mount performance winter tires. However, I can't find a match for the front and rear but Tire Rack often restocks this category in august. Sottozero makes sizes to fit the 19/20 wheel option but I need some sidewalls. If there are no 18/19 winter tires available then I will consider mixing front rear. I will purchase a dedicated set-up for the summer track season. I realize that a narrower tire is superior in snow but I am admittedly disgusted by the aesthetic. Plus, I rarely drive when the weather is really nasty. |

I would love to know if some of you do not change over to winter tires. I live in Virginia and have a X5 as a daily car so any weather that drops, my car will be in garage. Temperatures do drop very low in December and I typically don't switch over to a all season tire. Never owned a 500 horsepower car either...

Seems as tho finding winter rims is proving to be a bit of a challenge…
I've been sent a few options from tire shops from the $260-$330 range… These are all supposedly 19 x 9.5 with 5/112 |

I have a set of pilot Alpin 5's for my 435i 225w 18".
Wondering if they are going to be too narrow to use on my m4 when it arrives in Nov/December. Either I switch off the 437M summers I have and sell those separately to pay for a new winter setup and trade in my 435 with the winters or just trade it as is and use the winter setup I already have.... Any thoughts? |

I have similar questions as well. I wonder about a narrower tire for winter or if that's an urban myth. The challenge would be is there a compromise with a narrower tire given the high horsepower of the car.
Square 19 set up at OEM spec would be 275/35/19 I've seen some tire shops online advertising a 245/40/19 Square set up for G80 M3s. This would give you a narrower tire and more tire options. I just can't seem to get a straight answer on whether or not that slimmer tire can handle the horsepower of the car. You can get load and speed ratings that match OEM tires with that 245 size |

Or Trade in the 435 with the summer tires and use the winters on the G82. I did a bit more digging and I think I'll either just bite the bullet and purchase the 963M winter package directly from BMW designed for the G82 or order the square setup that tire rack recently posted. So I'll trade in my 435 with the cheaper winter wheels, sell the 437M summers, and recoup a bit of the cost of a new winter set for when my car arrives |

I'm sure this question has been asked already but is anyone planning on putting on the DSW 06 plus year round? I have an X5 as well but I just want to be able to drive the M4 in the winter but obviously not under heavy snow fall days.

There are threads discussing that very tire in the context of winter tires, with both reasonable arguments and some that leave me scratching my head. I don't understand why anyone who do anything other than have a summer set and a non-summer set, unless you simply can't for reasons. Anyone who can afford this car can also afford to store their off-season set with a service and get the sets swapped for them twice a year.
