It might have been the digital plates. They look black with white lettering.

California doesn't offer black / white plates. It was either an electronic license plate (Reviver) or someone did a custom paint job. My guess is it was a Reviver electronic plate you saw.

Florida has the Endless Summer plate which is superb. 👌🏽

This morning in north San Diego County I saw a white Tesla with a black and white CA plate. It looked like someone had painted black the red and blue parts of a standard CA plate. This may be what you saw and isn't legit/legal.

Edit: a quick Google search turns up people selling these on Etsy...

Saw a Volvo SUV at LAX today with black/white California plates. I commented on it and the person I was dropping off said she has seen 3-4 vehicles with such. I Googled this topic (apparently a popular search) and the most on point thread was a Tesla Club discussion stating that these are "100% illegal" with the penalty the same as a no plates ticket.

The Volvo today had its registration stickers on its rear plate, so if the owner gets ticketed its going to be bit_h to get compliant by mounting their correct plate.

My Googling turned up lots of sellers for these plates, mostly on Etsy. Nice to see there are lots of job opportunities for Folsom alumni.

i saw black with white lettering on a tesla today. looks nice! i dont see that as an option on the dmv website. anyone know how to get one?

Theres lots of people out there doing the wraps on plates. Takes about an hour. Black vinyl with white cut letters. Highly illegal and a red flag to get pulled over real quick. costs about 100 bucks. I cant advertise them till I'm a sponsor, but we sell and install Rplate's and they are very cool. Not cheap though...

They are custom plates people buy online. You can find them on Etsy. Not state legal though.

There's also the digital plate option which is legal.

I dont understand why people would get the digital plate... the unit is $215 a year or $20 a month

The battery version is $215/4 years. Over 4 years thats only $5 more than a 1960 legacy plate but with no personalization. I didn't want a personalized plate but I did want a black plate to match my BSM so the R-plate was perfect for me.

Incorrect - it is $215 per year for 4 years for the battery version.

Professionally done, very clean and clear and I got ticketed on both cars in the same week. The city I live in is anal that way and they were staring at my cars looking for something to write me up for. It's a shame when Law Enforcement has to look at your vehicle so hard and find something rather then look for criminals, but that's life is Commiefornia

Yeah, This is why a lot of people spend the money for the rPlate. Dont have to worry about getting pulled over for it.

In Los Angeles, I use a guy who wraps the plates, you send the plate in a USPS envelope and for $80 per plate he can do any color or almost any style you like and mails them back within days. I’ve done all my cars with carbon fiber and white letter cali plates, they look great! Check out @5150WRAPS_LA on instagram..
