This is why I always lease. It is like buying a put option on a stock. Push the chance of excess depreciation and potential issues onto the bank for a small fee.

The S63 is not immune, as the V8 burns oil— but not as severe as the S58 issue now.

I think everyone should take a deep breath and calm down until we know more about how serious the issue is. Very little information out there yet. It may turn out to be nothing. Annoying as it is, Cars have recalls all the time across all brands. The reality is this is BMW's problem to fix in any case |

Right the chip shortage stuff is expected. The only other issue I'm aware of is this bearing problem that affects 50 cars AFAIK. But I'm seeing comments about "all these problems" with the G80 so I'm wondering if there are more issues I haven't heard of.

If the issue with the x28i engines wasn't the liner material used, what was it? The attached (see para 2) suggests that my memory is better than yours… And that E36 was still a fantastic car. And here's a picture of said car, taken in Austria.

These things just happen sometimes and there is not much you can do about it. Just a bad batch of parts. It happens. I am sure BMW will make sure the engines affected will either be replaced or repaired properly.
For those drama-queens that do no longer want their cars i am also sure that BMW will take your car back without any issues in the current market. They will then just repair the car and sell it to someone else for a good profit. Maybe they will even sell you another M3 for delivery next year, so now they have sold 2 cars instead of 1. I am sure BMW will be fine. |

I shouldn’t have said dumb because that’s insulting and not taking into account that different people do in fact have different risk tolerance. Sincerest apologies for that. What I should have said is, I disagree. As has been pointed out, this issue seems to be affecting ‘22 models not ‘21, so it’s not the first model year and waiting for the second model year is in fact worse. This is an S58 engine issue and the engine has been around for more than a few years and also isn’t new. Since it appears to be engine specific and looking at the affected vehicles it’s not even an issue specific to the G80. My personal experience has not supported new model years to be a problem. I typically buy early in the lifecycle of a car because I don’t like old technology. This was the earliest I was able to by an M3 and I got it. Like I said in my previous reply in this thread, I got burned hard by a LCI, that by all accounts should have been relatively trouble free and not leave me looking like an idiot while stuck at a traffic light with a $75K car that wouldn’t start. The Kia driver that stopped to ask if I needed help was quite nice and sympathetic. |

I had a 2007 335i with the N54 engine. That engine was a lemon. Lots of it going into limp mode. BMW recognized that the engine had design flaws so extended the warranty for all N54 engines (might have been limited to the known issues, not sure). I kept that car outside of the normal warranty issue, and continued to have some engine issues. It was always repaired free of charge. I even had a Dinan tune on it, BMW never tried to blame the issues on the tune. My 2015 F80 also had engine issues within the first year of ownership. Limp mode. It was misdiagnosed about 4 times. The dealership initially just kept replacing 2 of the fuel injectors until they figured out it was coolant leaking into the cylinders which kept causing them to fail. It was going to be a large undertaking to repair it. I was quite upset about having a less than 1-yr old car with an engine that had to be disassembled and rebuilt. Then, the dealership said BMW had authorized a new engine for my car. Never had a problem after that (knock on wood). I signed an NDA with BMW so I can't say exactly what else they did, but they also offered me something for the trouble I went through. So, for those who are affected, I wouldn't worry so much about it right now. I'm sure BMW will stand behind their products.

Pretty obvious that the US hasn't posted the recall yet so I expect it early this week. My question is whether they will ask for owners to stop driving the cars as well. Sounds like it could be a safety issue which would open them up to liability if the motor goes while driving and causes an accident.
With that in mind, it will be pretty easy to just hand the keys back to BMW in California under the potential of a lemon law enforcement. Any car out of service for 30 days (in the first 18 months) gives the owner the option of a return for full refund including sales tax, interest, etc minus a deduction for mileage. A lot of states have a variation of this as well. Once the VIN list is posted for the US it should make the decision process pretty easy for most owners. My gut is that BMW will make some decent offers to ensure that some people decide to keep their cars after the fix. Longer warranties, loaner cars, etc. As an example the 2014-15 GT3's are actually sought after because of the 10 year warranties that Porsche provided after the motor recall. BTW just checked the production date on my '22 and it is 6/30/21 so I fall outside the affected dates Last edited by Salespunk; 10-10-2021 at 01:34 PM.. |
