M3 xdrive in Chicago winters
Does anyone daily their M3 during the winter in the chicago area? I have one on order I plan to daily (with snow tires) in the winter. I have a job that requires me to get into work despite most weather conditions. I have a Jeep Wrangler at the moment that I'd like to trade in on the M3 but can keep it if necessary. Thanks in advance!

I have a base G80 with the OEM winter wheel/tire set (Pilot Alpin tires) and got through last winter in Chicago just fine. You should have no trouble with your setup.

I've been here since 2012 and have daily driven an E82, F32, and two F80s - all rear wheel drive only. And I also have a job that requires me to be there regardless of the wx. I've never gotten stuck when properly equipped with good winter tires. I'm looking forward to picking up my G82 xDrive in a few days, and to see what it can do in the snow.

I've got a C43 AMG with all season performance tires. Never an issue except one time I got stuck in my city of Chicago proper alley slip. That was totally my fault. I thought I'd get cocky and try to drive through high snow. Ended up bottoming out the car in the snow.
For the M3CX, I plan on getting a set of wheels/all-season tires. |

I have a base G80 and plan to drive with winter wheel/tire. I drove my old f80 on winters with zero issues. It is all about the tires. My experience is that a winter tire is better than AWD on summers or all season.

What snow tires are you all using?
Does the Alpin 5 work well in blizzard Midwest conditions, or is it more of a cold weather per foremen drive tire? I have heard conflicting things and am considering the Vredestein Wintrac. My M3XC will be my DD as well. I have some remote work options (which is nice), but when I have to be in it is regardless of weather conditions.

My M4 (xDrive) did just fine last winter. I live 15 miles outside a town that measured 100" snow for the season. Mount a good set of winter tires, go easy on the throttle, and enjoy!
OP, no disrespect to your Wrangler, but I contend the M3/M4 xDrive will be a superior daily for winter. We had a JL Rubicon for 2.5 years, with the standard all-terrain tires. It's RWD till you shift it into 4H (at which point it crabs like crazy), and the tires didn't have sipes or rubber compound optimized for winter conditions. The Jeep's a great tool for its intended purpose, but metropolitan-area winter driving isn't a Rubicon's intended purpose. Last edited by luckylingy; 08-03-2022 at 05:01 PM.. |

Will definitely drive my M3 in the winter. Switched my X3 M with summer and winters on stock wheels for a M3 xDrive. Was at the dealer today for the break in service and requested a quote on the dedicated winter tire and wheel package.

Thanks for all the input. It sounds like I should be fine with the M3 in the winter. To be honest the Jeep really doesn't fit my needs anymore. I used to live in a more rural area, where the ground clearance during the winter was vital, but it doesn't really fit my lifestyle now.

Thinking of selling my brand new set of 829M + Alpin 5 wheels that have also been ceramic coated. But only if I can find winter tires to wrap around the stock 19s/20s.
