Is your G8x M3/M4 also your first M car?
Let’s see how the new design is working with respect to first time buyers. I am seeing many new faces here at M-club…
I will say, after owning my fair share of BMWs and knowing about the styling cues, I was originally not that into the new M3 and especially the M4…until I saw it in person driving down the street the I was sold and here we are. M240/M340 does not count as an “M” in this exercise.

I was never put off by the styling but seeing the car in the metal sold it for me. I like the boldness of it.
Also, being one of the last available manual transmission sport sedans (in the case of the M3 I have on order) really sealed the deal. I think it’s one of the last chances to own something like this. |

Yeah, it is my first personal real M car.
In the past I had the occasion to drive my brother's M5 E39 sedan, then I bought in 2016 an M140i 5 doors that I still own, but as the 1 series is an M performance car (not a proper M)...... the M3 is my first real M car ever.

The G80 M3 is my second M car, I had a E93 M3 6MT back in the days and I’ve always loved them until they released the next gen 3 series, test drove one and it totally turned me off.
It wasn’t a fair assessment since I didn’t test drive the M version but my friend got a F82 M4 (im still not used to the M3/4 moniker) and his car reminded me how my old E93 M used to be although NA is gone and replaced by a boosted 3L, most importantly 6MT isn’t offered in most cars these days. I was a little suspicious when they launched the G8X, like most people because of the pig grill, then I saw and test drove one in person which is the white one I got now and, the styling actually grew on me and the whole test drive experience made me take the plunge to come back to BMW. Less than a week of ownership and about 500km, still putting a big smile on my face whenever I’m driving

I am shocked by the poll. I thought it would be overwhelmingly "no". Welcome to the family, new ///M brethren!

First time M driver here and the looks is what sucked me in. I know that OG M drivers hate it but I couldn't get over how awesome and aggressive the car looked. I didnt even test drive the car before I bought it. I knew it would drive good, just not this good!
I do think the F80 m3 does look gorgeous BTW. I would have probably bought one of those if I could have afforded it at the time. |

I thought the same thing. It seems the new design is working well out in the wild.

It makes me happy. So many F8x owners saying BMW was killing the series with the grill. I will admit that I was not a fan of the grill until I saw it in person. I think it looks better than my F80.

First BMW and first M car. I was looking for a fun daily driver with a manual and was originally focused on things like the Fiesta ST, Mazda3, Elantra N (when it comes out), WRX, GTI/Golf R, and others in the up-to $40k range new or used. I've loved the M3 since I was a kid but kept talking myself out of it because it just didn't seem like a "prudent" decision. "Prudence" is what has kept me from buying nicer or more exciting cars in the past. Then I thought a little more and said fuck it. You only live once, and while those other cars probably wouldn't have been that much less fun to drive 90% of the time, they certainly aren't as special and wouldn't make me feel like a kid in a candy store every time I got in the driver's seat or want to stare at it as I walk away after parking. The possibility of it being the last generation being available with a manual (which I know is pure speculation) also helped.

For a long time I was an Audi guy, for me (street driving) they used to be a good ‘value’ for daily driving. They had really nice interiors were quick in a straight line (just don’t do anything too twisty) and a nice balance of sport and comfort.
Then they started really dumbing down the cars. Manuals-gone, DCT (DSG in Audi speak)-gone on the higher powered cars, super quiet (mixed blessing) and more expensive than similar BMWs. The G80 has a great interior with actual color options and is dynamically superior to the RS5 Sportback(it’s nearest Audi rival). It’s priced comparably with options that are more appealing to me. Hard to pass it by really. |
