Track Rims for Newb
Hi all,
I'd like to start taking my M3 to the track to experience its true potential, and luckily Laguna Seca is 10 minutes away from me. I'd like to get a second set of rims I can use for track that will work with the stock set-up. Being a newb to the track world, would love any input on what a good set of track rims would be. This is my daily so just looking for a second set that I can use for some fun on the track from time to time. Appreciate your time! |

Then you're mostly stuck with stock tire/wheel sizes. I would wait until places like Apex Wheels have options at reasonable prices as the wheels that are currently available are pretty expensive in my opinion.
Might get lucky and find a deal on someone's slightly curb damaged 825/826M wheels.

For my track wheel set I just go with a flow formed wheel from a popular brand. Some examples: Apex, Konig, Rays Grams, etc. For tires I use this guide: https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/ar...qMRLYWHotW0TT4 . The guys at Grassroots know their stuff and do some well thought out testing to get their results.
I've also been running a square setup for my track set. I've only ran the oem pirellis on autocross courses so I can't compare square vs staggered on a road track but I really like the balance of the square setup on a track. Gives you just enough rotation without compromising rear grip. Last edited by pinky_chi; 07-23-2022 at 02:32 AM.. |

Apex released wheels: https://www.apexraceparts.com/shop-b...g8x-m3-m4.html
I bought a set of oem wheels from a member here last year to use as track wheels. |

I'd check out this place for OEM fitments: https://www.alloywheelsdirect.net/bm..._saloon_alloys
I picked up a set of Apex forged wheels but they are a bit pricey for a first set of track wheels and I have a RWD - I can't offer any advice on xDrive fitments. Eventually, you'll need some track brake pads + fluid when you get going faster and generating more heat - TBD if you'll need them your first time out. It's a slippery slope but super fun! I still vividly remember my first track day in my F80 about 6 years ago and can't wait for my first track day in my G80 in September. |

Before you think the price is too good to be true, make sure you load up the cart and calculate costs - there is a healthy tax / shipping cost. From the homework I did, they still seem to be cheaper than others I've seen. |

963Ms are the lightest BMW M wheel and removing unsprung mass is far greater than removing any sitting mass like seats or whatever. I weighted my 826Ms with pzeros and my 963Ms with cup2s and the difference was 8 lbs per wheel/tire, so 32 lbs of unsprung mass *shrug* if you were looking at getting BMW wheels for track, 963M are the best choice IMHO |

I ordered 963M + Cup 2* mounted and balanced with TPMS and extra lug bolts (dont forget grey lug bolts) from alloywheelsdirect. Had them over a year. It was about 400 in import duties which still came out way less than buying in the US mainly for the tax and cost differentials on the tires. The michelins are much cheaper in Europe than in the US. I was very happy with the overall experience.

In the meantime, has anyone determined if you can run 19x11 ET22 square? A 10mm spacer upfront would effectively give you the OEM offset, right? These cars eat front tires for breakfast so being able to rotate criss cross would extend tire life at the track. Plus a square setup really simplies tire ordering. Btw, I have this style apex wheel for my F80. They look great and are very lightweight. Hopefullt BimmerWorld comes up with something too. |

Apex 19x11's will fit the same as a stock 19x9.5 wheel does with an 18mm spacer (19x9.5 et2), which is about the limit without camber (I rub a 19x9.5, 15mm spacer, Michelins, and camber. In reverse tho) However that does not take into account strut clearence. Either I or somebody else can measure this in the future.

Not the best pics but basically between the strut body and tire there is maybe 6-7mm. To the top hat though ~15mm.

Apex and Titan7 seems to have the most bang for the buck, and are high quality wheels. Apex has good support for track rats. Last I checked, they have a replacement plan for damaged wheels at a discount.
