UK car insurance issues November 2023!

Hi, as a F90 M5 driver, I am used to insuring myself for this sort of car, with no difficulties. I am just about to upgrade to a G80 M3 competition, a new one, and I am finding it a bit tricky in the UK.

The normal compare the market online enquiries just said non! and when I finally spoke to someone at Direct line Select Premier, I was told anything above £79k is a no-no nowadays for general car insurance, and they were only able to quote if I had a tracker fitted and it was inside a locked garage every night! What on Earth is going on?

Anyone with similar issues, I would be extremely interested to hear of sensible options, in order to proceed with this purchase next week!

Garage List
Just swapped my F90 for a G80 and my F90 was due to double anyway, so would have kicked me in the nuts whatever I did.

BMW’s own insurance was in line with my quote, but a tech glitch wasn’t showing the carbon their system, so went with another insurer. Worth trying there for sure.

I’m over 50, 3 points, 12 years NCD and it was over two grand.

I went to BMWflex in the end. Cheaper than previous insurer by half and cheaper than price a year ago. No replacement for new though.

60+ and 9yrs plus NCD was nust north of £1000. Needed tracker for previous insurer and parked on driveway.

Cost will vary by area.

Thanks both, I appreciate your replies. I persevered a bit and it was strange in that compare.com and compare the meerkat.com both came up with total refusal to insure me, yet when I tried moneysupermarket.com they came up with quite a few options including some big hitters like Admiral. This is the same Admiral who two years ago wanted to double my M5 insurance for no reason, so I left them! You couldn't make it up. Insurance companies are a law unto themselves. (For the record I am 60 with no licence issues and full NCB.)

I am pleased I'm not the only one swapping an F90 for a G80; the next M5 is not my cup of tea, and I wouldn't wish to afford it anyway! Looking forward to picking up the M3 soon. Can't wait.

Insurance pain (continues)

Hey All,
Thought I would revive existing post since it's not that old. Trying to get some feedback on insurance prices from others for the past few years on BMW M3 G80.

I live in North London (not high crime rate)
Age 40-45
5 years no claims
No points on license
No tracker
Parked on street
New G80 value was ~86k from Jan 2023

01Apr2022 - 01Apr2023 Annual premium £1076 Admiral. (9months of new M340i and 3months of new M3 G80)
01Apr2023 - 01Apr2024 Annual premium £2864 Admiral (Was quoted £3114 then reduced by Admiral)
01Apr2024 - 01Apr2025 Annual premium £2795.51 now with Aviva (Few days ago was quoted £4606 by Admiral and renewed with Aviva two days ago £2795.51)

In 2023 premiums sky rocketed for everyone in London age 40+. I know that much from friends.

I have used moneysupermarket.com for all my insurance quotes in the past and always was getting lots of competitive pricing and providers. Better than meerkat or direct line, not a promotion!

The scary part, today moneysupermarket.com was listing only 4 providers at £8326, £10800 and up!

Are we heading toward not being unable to insure our vehicles without storing them in the vault? Has the world of insurance gone mad?

Ditto - I’m a new owner swapped my g21 340i for a new g81. Insurance was actually cheaper than the 340 (failed the dreaded “is it modified question”).

I really wanted driveway parking but garage parking made it significantly cheaper, more so than tracker. I’m old, no points 10 years ncb and got a bit of change from a 1000. But was difficult. Some of the comparethematket offers declined when I tried to persue it.

Also discover some of them are using dynamic pricing similar to airline seating prices. The closer u go to the date, the higher it goes. My current insurer quoted me small increase (I was expecting a small decrease) but 3 days later when I went to take the offer, they bumped it up by 150 quid!! The whole industry needs re- regulating it’s gone mad.

The specialists all declined me because of mileage but admitted if I had a Corsa with exhaust the size of the bucket they wud be able to help me!

The garage requirement makes sense, I guess.

UK car thefts hit an all-time high in 2023 with keyless car tech to blame.
Car theft is at record levels in the UK according to data from LV insurance.
