Warranty bypass
Theoretically if i were to buy an extra ECU and tune my original ECU, i’ll have an femto and Stock ECU. Can’t i just Swap to the Stock ECU when it goes in for maintainence and swap it back to the tuned ECU when it’s done to avoid a warranty void? 4am thoughts. (i had a dream and woke up at 4:11am and wrote about this)

Well you could - but any technician who is any good at their job will notice that parts have been swapped in and out. If the issue here is that you don't want to void your warranty then I'd say either don't tune the car, or go with a tuning company who provides replacement warranty to cover what BMW no longer will.

A tuning company.
I believe technically the FEMTO can clone a DME and you could do what you want to do, but logs for time driven and/or trouble issues when a failure actually happens wouldn’t line up, especially if you had a failure (not usually the case) and you swapped DMEs and then took it it or had it towed in. Also, when power get cut to the DMW, all current DTCs are erased, so troubleshooting an issue after a swap would also be problematic, depending on circumstances, etc. Hell, the damn car had GPS tags on the log for when the engine is running and when they plug in and scan and see no movement on the car, but the engine and drivetrain were driven at speed, they know you were stationary and strapped to a dyno. Just FYI. |
