Headlight Condensation

Noticed for the first time last night that my passenger headlight was fully fogged up with the drivers side perfectly clear.

Really just curious if others have experienced the same issue and what they thought caused it. Wasn’t expecting the issue on a 3M old car. Although I’m sure it can have some common causes (i.e. Power Washing too close, etc)

Had the same on a previous car. Housing had a hairline crack that was letting water in. Dealer replaced it under warranty.

It’s fairly normal, but if it persists, see your dealer.

If the above doesn't resolve the condensation, take it in for service. There's a Service Bulletin for replacing the drain plug with an improved design.

I have the same issue on the same side. I’ve taken the car in for service and was told it was “normal” even after showing them the service bulletin. The dealership said the field engineer who ok’s or denies service request said it was normal. If they see large droplets of water in the lens’s then they will replace it. Condensation only, they won’t. I bought a new vent and will be replacing it myself. I find it to be BS and how can you claim it be normal when it didn’t happen for the first 18 months. Seems to be worse on very humid days.

Its just their engineer. Try making an appointment at a different dealer. I have done this multiple times in the past and it has worked every time. Some of those engineers are just a lot stricter or have a "I am in charge complex".

Yea that’s crazy. I’ve had to do similar with my X5. Had to go to different dealer and they were oh ok no problem.

Happened again today. Going to try and take it back again. Even the headlight lends itslelf is fogged up with water droplets accumulating now. We’ll see if there is a new excuse not to replace the headlight….

Pretty clear there’s a fault considering it’s happening in one light. If it was normal, you’d expect it in both simultaneously.

Sounds like one of those dealers who like to assert their power.

It’s funny because my service guy is like, yeah! I would love to replace it, we get paid real well to do that, it’s 5k for a non-laser headlight 😳

I had this problem after driving in the rain on my passenger side. I splashed a puddle while driving and water plus condensation got into my headlight. Quickest way to get rid of that condensation is to let air circulate. To do that remove the DRL from the top (the heat sink looking thing) and let it sit there until all the condensation is gone. Since I had dirt get into my headlight they replaced it under warranty, but I was able to get rid of the condensation by removing the DRL.

Ok, so I got a call back to make a service appointment. They now want to address the bulletin regarding the headlight vents. I showed them the bulletin on my last visit for this problem and at the time they declined to change the vents. This time my condensation was so bad I have a few water spots inside the headlight….too late to change the vents now in my opinion, I said I’m not settling for anything less than a headlight replacement. Let’s see how far I get…..TBC

Best of luck hoping to hear good news.

On my end after 3 or so days the condensation has cleared, going to see if it’ll make it to the next oil change to make it 1 trip

I guess this is a BMW wide headlights condensation issue nowadays, not only on a specific model, since I had it also on my 2023 M240i from the beginning (on the driver's side headlight). Dealer agreed to replace the headlight entirely and no more issues since then.

I thought mine was free from this issue… until I had to drive the car in heavy rain early December.
After 3-4 weeks in the garage, this is how my headlights look like.
Got a service appointment Thursday.
Hopefully they either replace the whole unit or the vents.

BMW really needs to do something about this. The whole “it’s in the manual for minor condensation” is absolute bs. This is a problem with the design and sealing of the light. This shouldn’t be happening and certainly shouldn’t be normal.
