Agree. I had a X3 M40i and the B58 felt like it had more grunt down low off the line but it quickly fell off where the S58 has more power at the top end. The M40 could also hold 8th gear climbing a hill where the S58 typically needs to drop into 7th if in auto showing the B58 had more tq down low.

I think we’re being a little harsh on OP.
He asks a reasonable question whether the M1/M2 button is the equivalent of the sport button on a M performance car. It’s not. If the M button he pressed hadn’t been mapped to sports or sports plus, it would be mapped to efficient and I’d argue a M340i in sport could launch harder than a M3 in efficient mode. As many of you have pointed out, if the M button is mapped to sports or sports plus throttle we’re all sure he’d get the kick in the back he was after. |

This.
This thread was absolutely not ban-worthy. Some of the guys, myself included, spend a lot of time on here but that can't be expected of everyone. We shouldn't just shun and ban everyone that has a question - new member or not. There are levels to knowledge. When did we get so sensitive and impatient? |

I’m not so sure OP was indeed a troll.
My buddy who has a 23’ M550i got a M440i loaner for a dealer visit and shared with me how he was so impressed with that platform , and enjoyed that car way more than his 5. So I let him drive my car on the freeway and canyons in hopes he would make the jump for an M4 for the next one. He tried every single setting possible that we have , with traction off , traction on ,all transmission & sport settings etc. and he also felt the 440i felt more composed, especially off the line and a better fit for his taste in every way. So this is in line with what OP was saying. |

But back to the point , for whatever reason the M440i punches harder at a dig and the shifts felt more crisp according to my friend. I didn’t get a chance to drive it as he had already returned it. Either way , I’m not a fan of controlled chaos. I want the M3 to feel like a monster who wants out of the cage, that’s the whole point. It’s not for everyone. |
