Yes, but I turn in a VAT form which waived me having to pay the VAT.
But when returning back to the US with the vehicle you will have to pay taxes in order to register the vehicle in the state you live in?

From my understanding of the rule. You will not have to pay the state tax at the state you move back to if owned 6 months or longer in the country of purchase.

recurrent "motorrijtuigenbelasting" of 248€ each quarter (mainly based on the weight of the vehicle).

When you believe this is already crazy, apparently as from 2021 the 21% VAT will also get applied on the ~40k€ BPM (so tax on tax!). Adding another 8202€ and 7002€ to the BMP. This renders the CO² tax even worse than in France!
This is insane. My cousin lives in Netherlands and was telling me his income tax is around 55% or so. I don't understand how people there have money left over to cover basic expenses like mortgage, food, and some basic entertainment, let alone paying for these taxes on their cars. Is everyone there making 500,000 euros a year or something?!

I have been looking into this, but I think it depends on the state. If you are active duty, there is a good chance that your state will waive the tax fee. However, if you're a civilian, there is a 50/50 chance depending on the state. There is no clear cut answer and different people have had different experiences.
This is all considering you own it more than 6 months.

All these US people with $100 registration... I envy you!

Here in AZ mine (I'm in pre-order waiting for an allocation) will be 8% tax ~7k and ~$1200 for the first years registration. It's so expensive in Arizona to plate a nice vehicle.

I see your $100 and lower it to $50 one time registration in CO. for any disabled veteran with a 50%> disability rating by the VA.

But we get shafted by our taxes... 8.3% that goes who knows where, because our roads are in horrible conditions.

I'm with you there, I have my tags, just waiting for the state to get my title so I can put the rear one on. I won't be using a front plate

Reading those European taxes makes me sick to my stomach. How are the people not revolting?

Total tax in Chicago is 9.25% on the sale price. Trade-ins only reduce the taxed price by up to $10k regardless of the trade-in value, and manufacturer rebates/incentives don't reduce the taxed sale price at all. Then new plates are $151 and a new title is $150. Plates are $151 annually to renew after that, and there's also a $90.88 annual city wheel tax. Fuck.

I'd take that over our registration fees. $1200 the first year means it'll still be in the 800's by year 3-4. But we do have pretty amazing roads!

In Oregon, it's $100 and change for registering for the first 4 years and a .5% use-tax. It's pretty darn cheap.
