KW V3 vs. Ohlins Road & Track - xDrive Fitment Comparison
Interesting video I saw uploaded comparing the fitment of Ohlins and KWs. I'm sure others have also seen that thread of the M3 CS installing Ohlins and the wonky fitment that resulted. It steered me away from considering the Ohlins and more towards the KW V3s. However, in this video the KWs are maxed out and the Ohlins still have plenty of room to go lower, which is notable since both cars have similar ride heights.
If you're seeking a high-quality street performance coilover in the $3k price range with maximum ride height adjustability, Ohlins looks like the best option. Comparison starts at 4:54 |

+1 for Ohlins, in my opinion, its the best coilover kit on the market

Bit of info below for those that are going the Ohlins route.
The height adjustment for Ohlins is on the bottom of the shock. The top part you see in the video with a lot of remaining threads is for spring preload. You can lower that a lot to get the height you desire but it would cause the spring to be loose. This could potentially damage your top mounts causing a creaking noise and your car will not pass safety inspection in some states. The solution we landed on for the M3CS customer to achieve his ideal stance safely was maxing out the bottom height adjuster, lowering the preload adjuster, and then add a set of helper springs to keep the main spring in place. TL;DR: get helper springs if you’re going for stance. Also side note: For those who plan to pair their coilovers with camber plates - some plates have stock spring stack heights but have taller strut stack heights which will add additional height.

Seems like for a g82 the rear sag factor is no longer a concern and MSS extra low corrected any issues. Would you recommend MSS extra low or KW HAS in terms of being able to keep the original feel of the car quite similar after changing out the springs

Also note that KW now includes Code Isolators in their kits, so the kits are pretty evenly priced when you factor in what's needed. Ohlins R&T do not include code isolators (available separately), but the KW code isolators are slightly less expensive and can be used if you want to save a little extra scratch.
That being said, the Ohlins R&T is a pretty awesome street package, you'll be hard pressed to find anyone disappointed in how they feel.

Wow, that's low!
How's the comfort at that ride height? From my initial reading on the forums, I've seen people highlight the comfort of the Ohlins while still improving upon the factory suspension when it comes to handling. It would be interesting to know if they still offer a good level of comfort when adjusted to the lowest possible ride height. |
