Can't believe some here are defending BMW M's new direction. M cars have been about handling, not just straight line speed.

If you people only care about straight line speed, go buy an American muscle car.

What about people that want straight line speed without rubbermaid interiors and shoddy build quality? Actually Mustangs and Camaros are very capable handling cars these days.

The sad thing is that the American "muscle cars" are out-handling BMW ///M cars these days

It is strange times when US car makers are building better track day specials than the Europeans. I am a pure car person and don't really care about badges. Right now my fun car is a Civic TypeR which is absolutely amazing on the street. Had it and my M5 at the same time and grabbed the keys for the Honda 85% of the time.

I have wanted a 2015 Camaro Z28 for a while because it is the last of the and best of the breed. There won't be any new large displacement naturally aspirated V8 track cars built ever again similar to the E90 M3 and high revving naturally aspirated V8's. Unfortunately the G80 only appeals to me as a commuter car to hit on ramps on the way to customer appointments. As a fun car I will spend my money on a stripped 718 GT4 or something similar.

It is crazy to me that BMW has lost its appeal in many ways. The cars are simply too big, too heavy and funny enough, too competent. They are pretty boring to drive unless you are doing stupid speeds for the street.

Too fast for the street yet too cushy for the track. Interesting dichotomy

Not that I have any desire to own one, but you get a ton of Mustang for your money. Starting around $73k you get a Shelby with a V8 with 760hp.

But the Shelby lacks the two stage seat massagers that I have in my 2020 M5.

I think the throaty roar of the V8 acts to massage your back. My current 6cylinder isn't quite accomplishing that. I guess I need to upgrade to a car that gives backrubs.

I think BMW has missed the mark with the new M3/M4. I saw them up close at a BMW event a few weeks ago, and they don't look horrible. BUT, that's setting the bar pretty low. The grill is too big, the headlights are too small, bluh bluh everyone has heard the complaints.

I'm gonna go one step further. The RWD version is quite frankly pointless. Despite the extra HP, it's not any faster than the previous generation, it weights more, and it probably doesn't handle better. My biggest beef with my F80 is the lack of traction. If I put my foot down, I hear a lot of rumble but the car goes sideways. It's one thing to say a car designed in 2014 would get smacked around by Tesla's and whatever in straight line performance, it's another thing to put out a similar car (performance wise) 6-7 years later at a higher price point.

They should have done what they did with the M5/M8. All wheel drive with the option to go RWD. I'm sure I'm gonna get a lot of hate for this one, but they should drop the MT as well. Get with the times and move on. Sorry.

But that big M5 still holds its own against the GT500

There is absolutely no doubt that the new M's perform, but electric vehicles have made straight line speed a commodity. Modern tires have made cornering speed close to a commodity. Now it really comes down to the feel of the cars when driving for me.
