Through the first half of 2021, BMW brand sales have increased by 52.2% compared to the pandemic-affected totals of 2020, while outpacing 2019 totals by 8.9%.

The company also reported Q2 2021 sales of 9,340 MINI vehicles in the U.S., a 76.6% increase compared to the time last period year. Year-to-date, MINI sales have increased 48.5% as compared to 2020.

BMW brand sales were balanced across the model range in the second quarter of 2021, with the BMW X3, BMW X5, and BMW X7 Sports Activity Vehicles, and the BMW 3 Series sedan as standouts. The company's lineup of Sports Activity Vehicles accounted for 60% of the quarter's sales.

"Thanks to the continued commitment of our dealers, and the strength of our production network, we have met the robust customer demand for BMW vehicles, and achieved a record number of consumer deliveries in the quarter," said Bernhard Kuhnt, president and CEO, BMW of North America. "The positive comparison to 2019 proves the growth and strength of our business."

In early June BMW also unveiled two all-new electric vehicles in the U.S. – the BMW iX Sports Activity Vehicle and the BMW i4 Gran Coupe. Both vehicles will arrive in the market early next year.

BMW Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles
BMW reported Q2 2021 certified pre-owned vehicle sales of 32,363, a 21.1% increase from the same quarter a year ago. Year-to-date, BMW certified pre-owned vehicle sales total 60,515, an 11.5% increase over 1H 2020.

MINI Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles
MINI reported Q2 2021 certified pre-owned vehicle sales of 3,384, an increase of 57.2% from the same quarter a year ago. Year-to-date, MINI certified pre-owned vehicle sales total 12,801, an 18.1% increase over 1H 2020.

*The sales reported in today's figures are of BMW passenger cars and light trucks, as well as MINI passenger cars. Consistent with auto industry practice in the U.S., BMW of North America follows the U.S. Auto Industry Sales Release Schedule issued annually by Motor Intelligence for purposes of reporting sales of BMW passenger cars and light trucks and MINI passenger cars. As a result, the sales of BMW passenger cars and light trucks and MINI passenger cars reflected in today's Q2 2021 figures occurred between April 1, 2021 and June 30, 2021.

Unsurprisingly, almost every model still in production is up from last year's historic lows (hang in there, Z4!).

About that 4 Series number, let's keep in mind that we don't know the model breakdown. Some of those are definitely G22/G23, but there are no doubt some F33 and probably even a few F32 still being cleared out. Plus, I imagine F36 deals are pretty good right now (as good as one could expect in the current market) since the G26 is about to replace that model. Soon enough - maybe by Q4 - pretty much all F3* will have sold, and we'll have an unobscured view of how popular the controversial new G2* models are or aren't. Of course, passenger cars, especially two-door models, continue their slow but steady downward trending sales, so that's another wild card. On the flip side, EV sales are blowing up, so the i4 should be expected to take up that slack.

Nice result by BMW, they are on a roll. Is H1 2021 all time high number of vehicles sold?

Well done by BMW to get the vehicles produced with the drama in supply chains.

Not quite. Those vehicles that are ordered and stopped at the port waiting on items like a Receiver Audio Module are included in those numbers. They are doing well, but the lack of communication on the current issues will do more harm. I have one such G29 in this category.

The Z4 is production limited, BMW has been LAGGING on manufacturing these since last year. Z4's are also not usually on any dealership lot unless its a custom ordered car.

Just checked a couple of my local dealerships. My dealership shows 2 in stock. Another one shows two on the way.

I agree the Z4 is a limited model, but not all are custom ordered. There are about 4 at dealerships in Houston with about 20 on the way. The chip shortage, combined with the pandemic, is creating a bottleneck. My point is BMW can do better in communicating to customers impacted like me.

Just about everything is production limited right now. I'd speculatively agree that chips or other constrained resources may be diverted away from it to other higher priority models. Still, we know it's not a high demand model - nor was it expected or intended to be. Hence why such de-prioritization seems reasonable. Whether or not sales pick back up going forward remains to be seen. Even if they do, it would likely take a major turning of tides to keep it in the lineup past the end the current generation model's lifespan. Having said that, I think there's a chance that a viable business case for an electric two seater from BMW could present itself sometime after 2035 or so.

In 2021-year-to-date vs 2020-year-to-date, X3 and X5 outsold the highest selling 3 and 5 series: 65.5K vs 37.4K.

It's a quiet yet pointed message to BMW: evolutionary changes to electrify X3 and X5 (in the first round of electrification) will do more to maintain and accelerate sales than the soon-to-be available iX.

Side by side with 2019 numbers might be a better comparison due to the pandemic. Still, well done BMW.

Here's 2019 YTD Sales from January-June (Before BMW switched to Quarterly).

I am very curious to see how Q3 Sales will look. While the chip shortage has been ongoing for some time now, it seems that the Germans are being more so affected now than ever. Within the last month, every time I've passed my local BMW and MB dealers the inventory has been dwindling. For example, my local MB dealer has only 9 new vehicles in stock and the lot is empty, my local BMW dealer was pretty similar with lots of open gaps on the new car lot.

Agreed.

Unless we're all interpreting the data wrong, these are retail sales/RDR not BMW North America selling to dealer numbers. If you car is stuck at port for anything, the dealer is unable to RDR and would not count in these figures.

Last I checked, both Audi and Lexus are doing better than BMW and Mercedes (Toronto Area) I expect them to be ahead if they're not already.

Audi's North American market share is definitely growing. Audi's YTD sales are up about 20% vs Q2 in 2019. BMW is only up about 5.5% vs Q2 2019. Although Audi is still behind 60k+(including Mini) units this year. Mercedes is up on both Audi and BMW in sales.

it's kinda interesting that they went through the cost of bringing the z4 to the USA, but a wagon isn't worth it. Would wagon sales really be less than the z4. Might very well be, but as a wagon enthusiast, seems off to me. On a daily basis I see many more wagons than 2 seater convertibles. So makes me wonder what numbers make it worth it for bmw.

No one knows unless someone goes deep into numbers. Also consider that BMW might want to remove a variant in the same series (3er, 4er) and force you into something like a X1 or X3 where the sales will be significantly more. Add that BMW split the cost of the Z4 with Toyota and by having a roadster just to have in the line up, all these things likely contributed and likely not whether a 3er wagon would outsell a Z4 (probably would).
