I actually love this style of gauges. When I saw it on the M8 in videos I loved it. In person it is just drool worthy. My buddies Aventador had it and I instantly loved that "fighter plan" look it has from the cockpit. F needles!

I’m also not a fan. There’s something less emotive, more clinical about these display dashboards.

They won’t age well either. Like an Apple Watch, who wants a first gen now? Yet pick a Swiss mechanical watch from 40 years ago and it’s still desirable. Timeless (no pun)

If I ever make the change, I am going to miss these gauges a lot

Digital display is 2D, analogue display is 3D, feels more natural to us as we live in a 3D world and see things in 3D

I don't mind the S2000 style digital dash but the design of the new M3/M4 dash is very pedestrian, not sporty at all...the tachometer is of most important to a purist

I hope they will allow further configuration of the dash board to imitate a classic BMW analogue dash and also a true racing style display

Pity BMW are so far behind in the digital dash stuff. Would be nice in the future to call up/ option through digital representation of your favourite M dash, e46 M3 or F82 M4, etc. I’m sure BMW would like to charge for that option!

This is a great point about 3D vs 2D

I really like this idea. Imagine they had a version for any past BMW? Even if they charged a few bucks for em, cool

As it all comes down to software, I don't get it either. Why not offer digital round gauges, selectable through idrive? Everybody (well almost) happy.

Granted, there is a business cost to doing this, it takes time and time is money. But it seems like a small time commitment and it could even be done over the air via software update

HUD is where it's at. Put in M view and the tach is right in front of your eyes!

I feel BMW is eventually going to lead the way with HUD. Everyone is focusing on making dashes and screen all pretty but not really touching HUD. I still don't get the fascination with Virtual Cockpit. It's a cool talking point but it's graphics overload.

BMW has been leading the way for years with HUD. I hardly ever look at my gauges. My upcoming F95 will have the virtual cockpit and not looking forward to it, but I'm willing to accept change.

Tbh this new dash does look a little annoying... I like the dash on the 2018 F90 and I believe the X3/X4M's have the same dash.

Very clean..

These dashes look great, I didnt know it was available for the F90 M5, was only aware of it for the X3M/X4M. Are the silver curved lines of the borders of tach, speedo from physical parts (such as in the G30) or are they digitally rendered? I can see bmw wanting to reduce cost by removing physical parts but even still the lines could be digitally rendered in the latest models.

They are physical pieces. The regular G30 and G01's had them as well although they were eventually removed and became digitally rendered likely to save costs.

There will probably be a subscription for even sportier gauges. ///M Performance gauges or some shit.

I'm fine with the digital gauges in the my X3M as they don't rotate counterclockwise like the standard LCD gauges on the new cars. I don't miss having analog gauges at all but as said above once you have HUD there's no need to look at the instrument cluster as you never need to take your eyes off the road with HUD.

^^^ this

i think it's fine in the 330i but out of place in the G8X.

i generally do not like digital gauges, and i despise the ones that have a slow reaction/refresh rate. audi does a very, very good implementation of digital gauges. as much as i hate audis; they are excellent.

but as someone who is not interested in giving up his manual, this is actually a bigger deal breaker for me than the exterior styling (which seems to be a bit risky, but can't be sure until we see final non-camo pics).

oh well.. .still 2.5 year to pay for this F80 and there's nothing out there i'd rather have at the moment so no biggie.

Agreed, I took a walk with the family down at the lakeside last night and while waiting at a cross walk a new and blingy Benz vert with the top down was waiting for green next to us. The gauges and infotainment displays in full view. Honestly that looked like complete sh*t and not like a car cockpit at all. More like a control center of a production site. Flat and bright screens, nasty.

But that’s all what it is, just an eye sore aesthetically and not a functional issue. Apple Watch vs an automatic mechanical Swiss watch. One is emotionally superior the other functionally superior. I’m ok with either but prefer the analogue.

Couldn't agree more. Wife has a new Audi Q5 with all singing virtual cockpit but without HUD.

Virtual cockpit I couldn't care about. In fact it isn't that useful. Far too busy. But I miss the HUD which I have on my M340i when driving her Audi. HUD is where it's at. I hardly look at the dash on my M340i

I agree that the HUD is where it's at (I have trouble writing such bad grammar). And if I have a digital number of my speed I NEVER look at the actual dial. I look at the number in the HUD of my BMW and the middle of my Jeep console can display the speed in digital digits. I'm not sure I know either car actually has analog gauges as I've never looked at them.

I don't know about BMW leading the game. Have you seen what Mercedes is doing with augmented reality in their HUD?

You could get them on the later F30's, previous 340i had the exact same one. In sport it'd switch to a red dash with a digit counter for MPH, it wasn't half bad TBH..
