Fender-to-tire gap

Submitted build for G80 M3C, which seems to suffer some enormous fender-to-tire gaps . . . particularly in the front.

Wondering if anyone is aware of release options such as MP coilovers/HAS that could be port or dealer installed?

This had already been discussed several times. Yes, MP-HAS are offered at launch, likely dealer installed. It’s in the M-Performance parts press release.

Can

Well, that thread was my first stop and the after scrolling through the first 10 pages all I saw was one post after another of expressed angst over the new G80/82 design. . . I said fuck it and decided to start a new thread. Your feedback is appreciated if you feel inclined to offer it here . . . if not, that is cool.

All I could gather from first post in referenced thread was the following:

"The M Performance sports suspension was developed and tuned on various different racetracks and is also directly associated with motor racing. The coilover suspension permits an infinitely variable reduction of ride height of between five and twenty millimetres (recommended lowering -10 mm vs. the M base model). With unchanged damper adjustment, the driver benefits from a lower centre of gravity, reduced rolling movement and even higher cornering speeds. In addition to increased dynamics, lowering also enhances the sporty looks."

This indicates that MP Coilovers will be available. MP Coilovers worked awesome both for aesthetic and performance purposes on my M2C (fixed) suspension; any experiences, thoughts or concerns regarding coilovers on the G80/82 (adaptive) suspension?

You indicated G80/82 will have "MP-HAS" available at launch. I am under impression MP Coilovers are just another name for what you are calling "MP-HAS" (height adjustable suspension)? Or, is MP-HAS different than MP coilovers?

Finally, any thoughts on the 1000M wheels in terms of how they might work to reduce the fender-to-tire gap? Is there any downside to the increased 1000M size over the 825M when it comes to typically spirited daily driving (I have no intention to track the G80).

Probably just different terms for the same thing. The MP-HAS that will be offered is basically an adjustable coilover setup so I'm pretty sure it's the same as what you call MP Coilovers...

I'm pretty sure the tire sizes on the 1000M setup will be such that the overall diameter would be very close to the 825M or 826M setup. It's basically more wheel but less tire. So don't expect this to impact the fender gap.

Thank you M-SPORT!

So, with the information you provided . . .

I had MP Coilovers installed on my M2C by BMW dealer after delivery . . . is it possible to have them priced out with initial build and port-installed (prior to delivery) with G80?

Here I can Provide you the Information:
As i wanted the 963M wheels I asked my dealer if he can add them to the order.
Unfortunately M Performance Parts must be bought seperately and you can't include it to your basic order...
So you have to order it and then let it install from your dealer or whoever after you get the car.

Yeah, it sucks.

Yes, it would be ideal if they could be port-installed and purchased with initial build.

Different markets may have different "rules". I'm not an expert on M Performance parts and I'm not sure if the rules are changing, but if I had to guess I'd say in the U.S. you can order a car with M Performance Parts installed.

Also not sure how the pricing works when you order those parts with the initial build versus later on, because in one case you get to keep the stock parts and in the other case you don't

Since I am the one asking questions I did not want to call into question the feedback from others trying to assist . . .

That said, I do suspect things are little different from one region to another. . . for example, things MAY be different in Switzerland where Scorp!on resides?

I did contact my SA who has always been fantastic. His honest feedback was that he does not know at this point.

They can be. It's just a question of when. I have an early allocation. I am not counting on the MPHAS to be available although mkoesel believes they may be (just as they were on the previous gen).

I will residualize the MPHAS (including install) and my lease payments will be more but the overall out of pocket will be less.

It's a question of semantics and jargon. By "pure" definition, a coil-over is a single unit where the damper is mounted inside the spring. By this definition, the front strut suspension is a coil-over by default while the rear setup is not. However, in the aftermarket jargon, the term "coil-over" is often mis-used to specify a spring/shock package, even if not mounted together.

So long story short, the M-Performance suspension for the G8X is more than likely a simple HAS kit just as it was on the F8X M3/4 and will use the same stock adaptive dampers.

All 3 wheel size offering have very similar tire diameters, so no impact of tire/fender gap.

We'll have to see more details about the 1000M wheels, but at first site, they would not be my preferred choice as they seem damn heavy just from the looks of them. The 19"/20" M-Performance offering shown of the M4 "looks" like a more performance oriented choice.

They could be. Various M-Performance parts have been offered as part of original vehicle purchase in different markets.

Thank you for the very thoughtful and helpful response.

I think I will stick with my 825M bicolor wheels and hope the MP Coilovers/HAS are available out of the gate.

Isn't the MP HAS basically a KW V3 suspension? Might be worth looking into different brands for the suspension as well, might be cheaper and/or better.

MP H.A.S. = KW H.A.S. (height adjustable springs) this reuses original shocks and struts and is what was offered on the F80/F82 M3/M4 and what is being offered on the G80/G82 M3/M4.

MP Coil-Overs = KW V3ish... this includes all new springs shocks and struts and is what was offered on the F87 M2.

Thank you JTO24.

Awesome information.

I had MP Coilovers placed on my M2C and have been very pleased with product. I obtained for aesthetic purposes, but found the ride and handling were also improved.

My interest with MP HAS for the G80 M3C is purely aesthetic, as the fender-to-wheel gaps look enormous (esp. in the front).

Based on feedback so far, seems the HAS will be a dealer install; not clear as of yet whether I will be able to order parts with original build?

Does anybody know how much were the MP-HAS (Height Adjustable Springs) on the F80 (assuming added to original order)?

I typically go with aftermarket springs and spacers for a more aggressive look but the idea of having OEM springs with a 20mm drop sounds like a good option.

No problem!

I thought the F80/82 MP-HAS was available as a port-installed item, like other M-Performance parts, but I'd need to confirm. If I go with a G80 and M-HAS, I hope it can be port-installed.

I don’t believe the MP-HAS was ever offered as “port installed”. Too complex of an endeavour. Tacking on CF parts and changing wheels is easy at port. However swapping a suspension, corner balancing the car and getting it aligned is a different story.

And to be honest, I rather have MP parts dealer installed because at least this way you get to keep the original parts (unless there is value offered with the port install).

It was not offered as a port installed option but dealers allowed you to residualize it (and keep the original parts) if it was installed prior to taking possession of the car. The result was the same.

I do not have the exact numbers in front of me, but my recollection is that the service bill approximated the parts bill for my MP coilovers . . . labor-intensive process and the dealership charges a LOT for installation.

Is there a service cost for port installation of ///M parts?

This is ultimately my goal; whether port-installed or dealer installed, it would be itemized on the window sticker and treated like an additional option.
