Isle of Man Green M3 & Sao Paolo Yellow M4 at the UDE - Impressions from an F80 owner

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I was able to sign up last second for the UDE here in Orange County to check out the grills in person. First impression was slightly better than the photos. The size increase is hidden quite well with the aggressive body style on the G8X, and honestly I can see how the larger grills balance out the size and proportions of the car. I still don't think they were implemented well, however. The grills are frameless and inelegant compared to the CSL Homage, which created seams and contours that seemed more organic for a large grill. The CSL Homage grill is also smaller, yet still retained the classic upright kidney grill:

The interior is an improvement over the F80, I just wish the competition seats had cutouts like the carbon shell seats do. I might be one of the few who finds the blue with yellow accents absolutely stunning.

My opinion remains only slightly more optimistic, but I still come to the same conclution–I can overlook the large grill, and I think the more we see it on the road, the more it's style will grow on us, but what I cannot overlook, at least until I drive it at the limit, is the weight and size increase.

Time will tell, but on a side note I did come away with a surprisingly good impression of the M235i, which is another one of BMW's latest attempts to make the ugliest car in the market. It's downright hideous from the rear. But driving it at the limit on the auto-x, it was surprisingly nimble, predicable, and went exactly where I wanted it to go with little wrangling and just enough oversteer to make it fun. The M340i, on the other hand, is good, but not as good as the M235i. I was not only faster in the corners, but having a better time doing it in the M235i. Is it enough to convince me to get one? No. I'll be eagerly awaiting the next M2 as a track toy. Disclosure: I track two days a week on a good month, one auto-x and one circuit. The instructors asked me my experience so they were a little more forgiving when I opened up both cars and managed to clip a few cones trying to get a tight a line as possible. It was a lot of fun, but alas, there was no timing, so no bragging rights except when I would consistently catch up to the car in front of me.

It actually looks pretty decent in these pics. Yes they could've implemented better but they gotta have a reason to pump up the LCI sales

How was the M340i compared to your M3? Are the M340i and M235i xDrive?

The M340i was a RWD I believe. Compred to my M3 CS, It's is a good straight line car, but it felt and was not as easy to rotate around the corners. I would say the M340i is a road car that needs quite a bit of modding to be a good track car. My M3 CS is good out of the box for the track although it still needed some mods, it was significantly more track ready than the M340i and I'm guessing the G80. That's how BMW designed them after all. M Performance cars can be tracked but are leaning towards the street, and M cars are truly closer to dual purpose.

Compared to the M235i GC, the M3 CS is significantly faster in the straights, but the M235i is easier to drive because of the size, weight, and AWD. That being said, on a circuit where triple digit speeds are the norm, I choose my M3 CS. On an Auto-X, the M3 CS still shines just due to the power. The weight difference is much much closer to the M235i than the M340i is. My M4 CS was weighed a few months ago and was in the 3600 range, close to the M235i GC.

I also think the blue/yellow seats, particularly in carbon, are amazing and want to spec my M4 with them. What I can't get past is that, to me, this combo almost necessitates going with Sao Paolo Yellow.

I've played around with Brooklyn and Dravit Greys on the configurators and SPY keeps looking the best if I really wanna go with the blue/yellow seats. Even with Portimao Blue, the blue hues clash with each other plus blue-on-blue is just too much. Tanzanite miiight work but our X7 M50i is already that color, so 2 of the same Individual colors... eh, would rather mix it up.

Great pics, you've taken some nice angles and got the depth of colour. What device did you use, phone or a 'proper' camera?

The interior is an interesting combination. I think the only exterior colors you can go with are SPY or Black. All others will look a bit off.

are my eyes deceiving me, or does the IOM M3 seem to have all black 825M wheels ? Those are not on the ordering guide (there is only bi-color silver 825M and orbit gret 825M, which is grey with a machined lip).
would much prefer the all black 825M version if possible.

Im not sure I understand the CSL Homage love from so many forum members. The car body style is nice and provocative but the grill is terrible.

I think a lot of the looks being problematic is that the headlights don't go to the grill like in the Hommage. I creates a void between the headlights and grill which make them even more pronounced.

It's not perfect, but I think they handled the grill better.

SPY and IOMG are such beautiful colors and are perfect for this chassis. I can see why they are the launch colors.
