Wait for allocation or take car from the lot?
I need your help with a decision. I'm next up on a list at my local dealer for a G80 6MT, which I plan to order in Oxide Grey on Tartufo with all the fixings (minus carbon buckets). I don't have an allocation yet and I have no idea what the timeline will be to receive this puppy. On the other hand, my dealer called me and let me know I have first dibs on an Alpine White on Black leather with the 18/19" stock rims and Exec Package only.
What would y'all do? Other stuff to know- This won't be my only car. I'll be taking my two dogs in it daily (part of the reason I'm getting it). I don't drive very far. I plan to track it every now and then. |

Depends on how long you are planning to keep this vehicle and how desperate you want to get into one.
Personally, i would wait for a vehicle for spec which is at least closer to what i want. |

I would wait for close to what you want, if anything. I had a car on order but lucked out and a week later a guy's financing fell through on exactly what I had ordered except the wheels, which I'm fine with, so I got lucky.
With the cost of these cars, and how long most of us have thought of an M3 as a dream car, I wouldn't want to compromise much on what you really want. |

Depends in how you feel when looking at the car. For me cars are a totally emotional thing. I dont use logic, its kind of like picking a woman. When you have to have it, you bend logic to your emotional state.
If you dont want "that" car, dont get it. Better to be longing then to be regretful with a bad choice. Get an allocation and keep hunting

I agree with the above sentiment. Personally, I'd open my garage every day and think about the car that I really wanted. Actually, the wheels would be enough for me not to consider it.
Curious, you're buying an M3 to take your dogs in it? I'd love to see your weekend car.

Yeah as others have said it's such a personal decision. Me, I'm not patient to begin with and after 2020 realize life is short and we have no idea what's around the corner so unless it was something I really didn't like I'd get what I can get now. These days, so much can change in 6-12 months.

Wait and get what you really want. For this kind of money you better get what you exactly had in mind. Dealer is not after your interest.

My dealer found virtually the same car I would order at Crevier, so easy decision for me. Good deal, excellent trade on my '18 Vette. However, your choices seem miles apart. I'd order and wait. As said above, a lot of money to not get what you really want.

It boils down to if the car has your wants/must-haves options, your don't-mind options, and doesn't have your definitely-don't-likes.
I was in a similar position, where I was about to pull the trigger on a G80 M3 that had the things I considered as "must-haves", but was lacking a few of the wants, and had one glaring definitely-don't-like. At the end, I lucked out and was able to snag an allocation within a few hours of me about to pull the trigger on an M3 that was on the lot (again, huge thank you to BMW of Omaha for having such an incompetent CA and manager tandem!) and am happy I was able to spec an M3 to my exact wants and desires. I even got an individual paint Oxide/Tartufo is pretty far from AW/Black.. I personally wouldn't even consider it given how beautiful Oxide Grey is and how boring black interiors are. Lastly - what are the terms? Are they willing to sell this AW/Black G80 at MSRP? If you build one, are they willing to give that to you at MSRP? If they sell you the car they have on the lot at MSRP, you may be able to flip it at an extremely minimal loss/profit when your actual desired car comes in. The semiconductor shortage is looking like it'll last a while longer, so it might be something to consider.

It wasn't really what I wanted (M4 Comp xDrive in TBII and M Carbon Pack), so while it was tempting to be able to get straight into a G82, it wasn't the one I wanted and I know I would've regretted it So my advice, get your order in for the spec you want and be patient, it'll soon turn up! |

You are in SF, a big market, so getting an allocation at a dealer who gets lots of allocations might be a bit easier, especially if you have a good relationship with your CA. I managed to get an allocation the same day I asked for it. Ordered and went into production almost right away. I got lucky and after only a little over a week the build was complete. My CA expects the car to arrive in a month, which will make it almost 2 months since ordering it. Of course everyone's experience may vary, that all depends on shipping or production delays. Some people were stuck in QC for weeks and weeks. Mine only took a day in QC.
There is currently no discounts on in-stock M cars, so you aren't losing out on ordering one except that you might have to wait, but at least you are waiting for something custom tailored to what you want.

For me it's not hard to pass on a White on Black or Black on Black build. IMO So boring considering the choices they were given. That being said, if you can live with the color then grab it. It may be gone already.

I agree with a lot of the above I get the angst of really wanting the car now but agree that I would look at it every day and know it wasn't what I really wanted and however long you own the car is a long time to have that thought daily. The combo you want is a long way from white black so I would also wait.

Buying a car for around $90,000+ I would, have always, ordered exactly what I wanted.
Since 2004 have ordered every BMW save one, the 2020 Z4 M40i. Bought it off the lot because it was the exact car I would have ordered.

I'll pile on -- wait and get exactly what you want. The color combination you want is terrific, and the extra bells and whistles are worth having. Only take the one on the lot if you aren't sensitive about colors, don't plan to keep it long, hate waiting for anything, and need a set of wheels right now.

this is what i did..
got on a allocation waitlist at my local dealer. they only charge MSRP; no markup make a list of must haves and deal breakers i found a car that was close to what i would order and had no deal breakers. I picked it up at msrp. by the time i receive my ordered car (probably summer time) i will sell/trade in my existing car. I estimated that i would lose $5k but if this market holds up i may not lose anything

Depends on how you view the car. Is this something you plan on keeping long term or is it just another vehicle in the lineup? It sounds like the latter and if so I would take the in stock car. Hoping that you can get an allocation in the current environment is a fools errand unless you are going to keep the car for a very long time.
