Who's debating an M5 as an alternative?
I've been an M3/4 guy since 2000. I've had at least one of each generation and never really was drawn to the M5. However, I'm considering it now just because it has 600+ horsepower and room for four. I think the G8x will look great in person. It's really the looks of the M5 that I'm not so sure about. It's just ok to me, but that power is calling, and the G8x is getting pretty heavy and pricey.

I look forward to driving my 2020 M5 every single day. I've had it since February. It's fantastic.

Never been a fan of the heavy ass land yatch M5. G8x is heavy too. I prefer more nimble and lighter cars (F8x) because I track.

M5 is a lot bigger and more expensive then the M3. Dont see many make that jump but if you go on the M5 forum there are def people who do. Its an amazing car, I love driving them, super fast and luxurious, but just a tad too large for me personally

I do. Just need to know the final word on the G82 AWD weight and out of the door price vs the M5. Great M5 deals can be had now and likely even more so next summer. The difference towards the first batch of G82 AWD price out of the door could be narrower than at a first glance. Similarly G8X weight is rather unclear.

I am contemplating M3C as alternative to M5C. Cheaper, lighter and despite the grill better looking. Love the M sport seats in the 3

I am really considering one and may go for CPO 19 or 20. Currently on my 5th 7 series and may miss a lot of amenities that my car has now. I just want a M car and have never owned one. My goal was to own a new BMW for my next car but if the right M5 came around, I wouldn't hesitate to buy. Although next year after August if I could catch a motivated dealer with a M5 in inventory for while with a lot of trunk money, I may be in. I've heard of discounts as high as 20% but it may be a unicorn.

I'm not a big fan of the M5 looks, the real calling is the power. I'm guessing the G8x will be a bit quicker than it's predecessor, but will leave us wanting more, especially in the acceleration department.

Agreed, nothing to do with styling, practicality, luxury or size advantages. The only reason I’m considering the M5 as an alternative is the engine. The rest is better or equal in the G82 for my needs and wants.

Short version: M5 is great for what it is .. a big heavy fast autobahn cruiser ... don't expect it to be a jack of all trades kinda car (sports car + touring). M5 is fast, cool, spacious ... but when I had an M6GC Competition I had really hammer it to get any kinda "fun" out of it ... and it really wasn't even fun on track ... it WAS always a nice place to be with the high end sound system, beautiful sounding Akrapovic exhaust, CCB were cool, but I prefer a more nimble car.... it's a lot of money for a car serving the same purpose as a Honda Accord that you cannot *legally* really tap into. Merging onto highways was great but I found myself far exceeding posted speed limits too routinely bc the car would do it so effortlessly.. that's my fault but high speeds is where these cars really shine.. accelerating hard to 35-70mph gets kinda old. I love it for what it is but ultimately I can think of better ways to spend my money ... e.g.: M550i (or M3) + $40k sporty car of your choice. Plenty speed and luxury from the M550i or M3, and can find a sportier and more fun car for $40k to fill that purpose, especially if you dive into the used car market for your weekend car... If I get another large M car, itll prob be an X5M... I can at least haul/tow some stuff which would help justify the $$ ... If you have access to the autobahn, the M5 makes more sense ...

And that the thing with the G8X, it’s closer to being an M5 than it is of being an M3...

Short answer: no. I have no need for 4 doors, cost is probably +30k, and I really just don't care for the styling of the current 5's. Nice looking sedans and great cars with a great engine, but just kinda meh as far as looks go.

An G82C specced to my liking (not fully loaded) is 112k CAD while an M5C specced the way I'd take it is 127k CAD, that ~11k USD difference... And that's at MSRP. They are offering huge discounts on the M5. I remember when I bought my first M4 in 2014, my dealer offered my an F10 M5 off the lot for cheaper than what I was paying for my M4 then.

I did briefly consider the idea of an 8 something coupe which was going to be in that price range, although I think I've talked myself back down to the M4.
