I'm having issues with the MT
Ok so maybe this is my first BMW MT.. but this thing feels worse than some Hondas or Mazdas . Am I crazy?.. the shifter feels flighty.. and this clutch is a shit show . I feel like 1st and 2 is a guessing game with when the engagement occurs . Every damn time .. it's like muscle memory just isn't going to be a thing . Then as far as the shifter is concerned it is actually a mess with 5th ..it just doesn't feel smooth or directed.. like the tolerances of a Willy's ...
1200 mile service is in the morning.. and I am about to tell them to keep it until it feels like an 80k car.. Not to mention.. this steering pull when lka is disabled is stupid Ugh.. kinda mad. |

G80 would be my 3rd MT BMW.
The BMW shifter has always been rubbery with seemingly inaccurate but actually accurate long throws. The clutch engagement point is high and vague (try adjusting your seat further back). You can't sit too close or else it gets frustrating. A clutch stop can help for some people. It's not meant to feel Japanese. Most German MT cars feels similar if you've driven the VW/Porsche stuff.

Please try deleting the CDV and report back with the results. I guarantee that this will solve your shifting engagement issues, because it did for me in the s2000, as well as the Type R

Not exactly apples to apples to compare MTs in Hondas or Mazdas to G8X with more than double the torque. Finding the engagement point i.e. 'smoother' shifting in a torquier car is going to take some time getting used to. I do agree the shifter action and the 'direct' feel in Hondas is superior to say the least (my first car was a 2001 Honda Prelude 5MT) but I would also say in comparison to something like 7MT in a C7 Corvette Stingray (my last car) with heavier clutch, vague pick up point and the most rubbery shifter I ever used that makes you miss shifts time and again, the 6MT in G8X is a pure joy.

Clutch stop was the answer for me. The shifter isn't as good as my Acura's of old, but I'm used to at this point and enjoying it plenty.

My F87 felt this same way. I HATED the 1-2 shift. Deleting the CDV made a world of difference.

It's hard to appreciate something when it is disappointing.. Not sure why I can't have an opinion that isn't positive.. Isn't it better than everyone bashing it that doesn't own it. I mean there is a lot I love about it.. but not feeling comfortable shifting kinda kills the experience of buying the MT. |

since you have all provided great insight.. is the tapping of the steering wheel in a direction and then the car keeps going in that direction normal?.. it definitely didn't happen in my 650.. I have to constantly correct it back on course.. I disabled LKA and all the other nannies.. and it still does it.

I agree. The 1-2 shift is stressful at best. I'm hoping it's just me trying to learn the catch point of the clutch. I installed the clutch stop and it helped, but doesn't solve the seemingly unpredictable catch point, particularly from 1-2. Probably one of the reasons they de-tuned the HP/TQ in the manual version. I've driven a lot of manual cars for a long time but this is my first BMW manual, so I'm hoping I just need to get used to it or it needs to break-in a little. I'm not giving up on it
There will always be the BMW fanboys criticizing any criticism of these cars, but people dropped a lot of money and have a right to question aspects of them. If it hurts your feelings focus your attention on the threads that don't. |

Welcome to the wonderful world of turbo BMW 6 speed transmissions
You basically can't quick shift 1-2. It has to be ultra slow and deliberate in and out with the clutch. Until you guys figure out the holy triangle: Ultimate clutch pedal CDV delete And get a short shifter(auto solutions) You're basically out of luck. This exact reason is why I went with the m4c |

The posters above are absolutely correct when stating that the BMS clutch stop and CDV delete will solve 90+% of the issues.
I’m curious as to the CDV delete for this model. E9x only required removal of a small plastic valve. F87 required replacement of the slave cylinder from an E9x. Hope the G is similarly simple. |

Try shifting at 2300rpm. Dont go to 3000 for 1-2. I recently drove the G80 6sp and worked fine for me.

I'm wondering how it would feel to a noob driver. I've never owned an MT car, but have driven them sporadically (mostly on vacations in Europe/Asia, and occasionally here in the states), but never on a regular basis. And I've certainly never driven an MT car this powerful.
I'm strongly considering the MT G80 when it's time for me to order my next car, and not sure I'll have an opportunity to test drive an MT version (I don't imagine they're typically sitting on dealer lots, most inventory will probably just be 8spd).
