4000lb M3/M4?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
What the hell BMW.

First, the looks - Hard pass

Then I read the specs to HOPEFULLY recover...

3900lbs? With a dad-bod driver like myself, I'd be nearing almost 4,100lbs. The F8x LOST weight going from the E9x platform (even if by not a lot)

ZF Auto? (Great in M5/M8 but it's a TT V8 with 600tq so expected)

Anyone else completely disappointed by the weight figure?

EDIT: I just realized that they announced the F8x M3 at 3350+ lbs and real world weight was 3560. If that same math applies.. this could be a 4,300lb car....

Yep, I am also not too impressed... At least when the f90 m5 was released it lost a little bit of weight. This is strange that this G80 gained so much weight. Maybe some requirements for weight reporting have changed??? It is a bit worriesome and I truly hope they were able to do everything to mask that weight somehow!

I do however applaud to the brave design that bmw risked here and to be honest I love it on the M4... I think it is spectacular and people just did not yet wake up from the old school designs and need some time to readjust.

Correct me if I'm wrong but current gen Mustang is now lighter? Kinda tempted to stay NA now... What a crazy world 2020 is!

I was interested in this car even after seeing the front grill but no DCT and wow the weight. If I'm at 3900lbs the Audi RS6 may be the way to go, what another 600lbs lol.

The combination of weight, size (5 inches longer!), auto (no DCT/manual), and looks (not a good first impression for me) strongly argues for waiting and comparing to new M2. That said, majority probably have lease timing to consider. Might be a good time to have an affair with another brand - can always come back.

I wouldn't surprised if the new M2 is the old M3.

I don't dislike the M3. But at this weight I don't know. Also even if I don't dislike it, the M2C looks better to me. So does the M340i. I wonder what BMW will do with the G87. Not so much the looks but the current M2C is pretty good. G87 with 300 more pounds..

I wouldn't hit the panic button just yet, While the G8x is heavier for sure your analysis is a bit off and mismatching weight standards, the magnitude of the increase is not as big

From the original 2015 launch presser:
"BMW M4 Coupe US Curb Weight - 3530 lbs (manual) / 3585 lbs (DCT) (incl. full fluids, all standard equipment for US and all options expected to be equipped on more than one-thirds of M4 sold)"
So for a 2015 auto ~3600lbs and that is before the heavier competition model even existed

What we know about the G82 comp weight: US curb weight :3880 (+300lbs) however we also know from insiders that the G8X US curb weight is among the heaviest variants including the executive (power trunk motor... really Bmw?) and parking assistant packs.

Point being unlike the F8x, with the G8X a customer should actually be able to walk back the weight in a meaningful way by skipping the exec pack, and opting for the carbon buckets, carbon trim, and lighter weight track wheels (includes cup 2 tires)

While it won't get all the way to the F8x it will provide more separation than has existed in the lineup between the lighter choices and the heavier choices

...The new M3 (with the manual box and rear wheel drive) tips in at 1705 / 1780 kg (DIN/EU) unladen weight. The M4 is 5 kgs lighter. This means that both are roughly 200 kgs heavier than its predecessors. (M3 185 kgs / M4 + 203 kgs)...

https://www.bmwblog.com/2020/09/23/b...top-20-things/

ie 407 and 447 pounds heavier respectively but M Race track package reduces 55 pounds only

edit from link above,
12. M Race Track package is new
M Race Track Package offers a reduction in weight of about 25 kgs. This package includes M Carbon ceramic brakes, weight-minimized M light-alloy wheels (available as an option with semi-slick tires) and the M Carbon bucket seats. Other options in the package which are market depended are the M Driver’s package and the carbon high gloss interior package.

I think the F80 M3 Comp was pretty close to 3700 lbs with standard equipment. not sure about the standard equipment the G80 was weighed with that was discussed in a previous post but it could be a 150 lb weight gain or less in the real world.

The G80 may also weigh higher with the same "standards" as the F80 comp at 3700 lbs

I could get used to the unconventional look. The weight is what kills me here - this is why I go M and not C63 etc. Now there's hardly any difference at all. Why?

I use Euro weights for all the comparisons. It's more reliable as it's a homologated weight, not marketing weight.
Pretty monstruous increase, My own F80 CS with a full tank and without me in it weighed 3640 or so, so right there with the euro weight spec

This is by far the biggest issue in the new M3/M4

I got about the same in my CS with a 3/4 tank. Why they keep making this car bigger I have no clue. If you want a bigger car, get an M5 or an X3M. BMW couldn't just leave my beloved M3 alone. I really really hope they treat the M2 as the true spiritual M3 successor. Don't short change it like Porsche does the 718. 500hp 470ish torque M2 weighing no more than 3500lbs., decent styling, proper interior and seats with a pass through for harness... I'll take one, for the love of god, I'll take one.

Unfortunately the M2 will weigh the same as the M3 like we saw in the F8X generation

I'm sure BMW will use the S58 for the M2 which is cool, as a simple ECU tune will take you to 600whp which is quite good!

Porsche 911 (992) weighs 3300-3800lbs. NSX weighs 3800lbs. C8 vette 3700lbs. It's a new game out there

Buyers want all the luxuries, bells, whistles, and comfort...all while turning out highly competitive Nurburgring times. They don't want a car that lacks comfort, noise insulation, highly sophisticated electronics, dampening, ect. GT cars.

They want a car that can do it all. Mature and full size all while being capable as hell. They stuff massively powerful engines in there.

Go get groceries, bomb the highway, take a road trip, hit the track without fatiguing you too much.

M2 (or the supra) takes the place of the previous gen M3 cars that has a bit more sports car nimble feel
