Your hypothetical is not reality.
  1. The M8 received much praise. If they made the G8x to look more like a mini-M8 with regular-sized grills, then there would not be so much complaints.
  2. On the other hand, had they made the M8 with gigantic grills, you can bet people would have expressed similar opinions as they have with the G8x photo leaks.

I'm also in the it looks pretty good camp. I just think the bottom lip is too thin, if they make the grill slightly smaller on the bottom it would look perfect.

I remember when I bought my 96 Prelude I was dead set against the new 5th gen 97 model but will time I much prefer the 5th gen. It took me many years to appreciate its design and now the 4th gen looks slightly dated

This car looks god damn awful. I don't care about what you or BMW says about making the generations more pronounced and different. An ugly car is an ugly car period.

No kidding eh! Every time I had a guest in my car they would drool over the dashboard when I started the car. You will never see a car with a dash like that. I had the vtec (sr-v in Canada) that thing screamed.

I had the Vtec sub 4WS that was the "top" model in the usa. I was not concerned with 4 wheel steering at the time and wanted cloth seats so I went Si.... loved that car, so fun and simple. I joke to this day i wished I had bought two and left one for simple maintenace in a garage... loved it. SO rarely see that generation anymore in NJ USA here. The other day on a hill pass I saw one... must have been the first in a year

Scott had mentioned Official Photos ( actual car? ) July... but that might be delayed based on current situation... might delay production of G80 perhaps ?

Contrast this to Mercedes-AMG who market their top-end cars on the basis that every engine is lovingly assembled by a single highly trained engineer who signs a numbered plaque in the engine compartment.

What does this tell us about the philosophies of the two companies?

Also, MB are putting in DCTs, and BMW are taking them out.

For current generation cars, the F82 with M-DCT is still streets ahead of equivalent AMG from a driver engagement perspective, but I'm not sure I expect that to continue much longer (since next generation they will both be heavy GT cars). On the design and technology front, BMW are already behind imho.
It's a mixture of elements pedestrian safety is one of those. The penultimate being production costs and application and impact legislation.
Another overlooked but significant is that in a low end shunt the nose cone absorbs the impact without damaging the hood itself. Therefore for insurance purposes costs will Be lower for initial repairs.
Who had: functional?

This guy.

Will BMW really build this car with the bottom covered in plastic trim? Also, not a fan of the USB charger diffuser. Otherwise I like this view.
