BMW says I need a friction disk

My car has been at BMW for the past few days for a clicking noise in the front suspension. I hear this noise when my wheels are fully turned backing out the driveway at low speeds.

The service advisor calls me today and he says he believes my car needs a friction disk to avoid this sound. The shop foreman now has the car, and I will get another update tomorrow.

Has anybody else had this issue? Car is completely stock.

Mine does it too, it's common. Nothing bad something to do with hub rubbing. I just live with it.

That's exactly when I hear it. They think a TSB will be put out soon. Apparently this issue is common in the X5's. If it's not doing any damage to the car I think I may ask for them to just return the car to me since they've had it all week and are still unsure how to solve the problem.

I keep checking the tires for rubbing but can't find any signs of it because the sound is like clicking sound. Almost like a card in between bicycle tire.
Please keep us in updated.

We also have a 2021 x5 M50 but never heard any noise.

Just about every suspension lowering thread, mentions this clicking. I had it stock, I just had the M Performance HAS installed, the other day, and now the clicking is a little more prevalent. Hopefully they figure it out.

Isn't a friction disc a brake rotor? I'm not familiar with any suspension component referred to as a friction disc. I don't know everything but enough to call this out as odd.

No its not static, you need to be moving. I had it on my M240i as well. BMW has known about it for 8-10 years at least.

There was an SIB for that and later was updated to include a "friction disk" that goes between the brake disk and hub. It's literally a very very thing ring of something that acts as a spacer of sorts. EDIT : Bingo - I found it https://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-2...n-washer-ring/

Sometimes loosening and then re-torquing the wheel bolts to spec helps for a bit. I've learned to just ignore it it doesnt hurt anything.

SI B34 08 14: Ticking Noise from Front Axle When Cornering

SITUATION
The customer may complain of a ticking noise from the front axle when cornering, maneuvering, parking or
pulling away from a parking space. The noise can be heard as a light metallic ticking from the front outer
cornering wheel.
CAUSE
Movement between the brake disc and wheel bearing hub.
CORRECTION
Remove and clean the front axle brake discs.
Sand the hub surface on the brake disc
to the wheel bearing hub using 80-grit
sandpaper.
Sand the surface in a radial motion
(inside to outside around the surface.
Clean the wheel bearing hub surface.
Important!!
Do not sand the hub surface.
Do not apply any type of lubricant to
the components surface (wheel bearing
or brake disc).
Reinstall the front axle brake discs.

I had clicking on my F80 and F10 M5 - both lowered. Took it in w/ the SIB, they performed the cleaning and installed the disk. On the F80, which was worse, it took about 80% of the clicking noise away. 100% gone on the F10.

I anticipate having to do it on the G80 I order, too.

According to my service advisor I'm now waiting for BMW to approve putting on the disk. In the meantime I picked the car up. I'm not sure why bmw would deny it but he told me to give him about a week to hear back from BMW.

These were first seen on the F8X chassis, to keep the rotor from rotating on the hub (part of a PUMA case), causing a clicking noise. Haven't seen it become an issue on G8X, but since it shares a lot of suspension on the F8X, it's probably inheriting some of the issues as well.

That's crazy, the clamping force on the hub/rotor is like 15000lbs with 5 lug nuts, and its rotating?

The reason probably is that this was officially released for the F8X and BMW needs to check if it is valid for the G8X.

I had this done to my M2 back then…I have the clicking noise on my G82 too and already asked my dealer about anything similar for it.
He said there is no official instructions for the G8X yet.

I was at an event, yesterday, and noticed an F90 M5 doing this "clicking" with the M Performance suspension. I also had the sound on my car, before the suspension.

Did you have wheel spacers before lowering when you heard it?

Both. I heard it before I put the spacers, on. The spacers changed nothing. Then installing the springs, it is still there.

I'm hearing this clicking as well. Only at very low speeds, after fully stopping/braking and I nudge forward with the wheels fully turned there is 1 click. Usually can repeat it but sometimes doesn't happen. So what's the verdict? Take it in? It's kinda annoying... Clicking in $90k car 🤔
