Current G80 6MT makes 527hp at the crank. BMW published rating = 473hp. Just like my 2019 M5 (base) which probably makes 670-680hp at the crank. BMW published rating = 600hp. See this: https://www.caranddriver.com/feature...no-horsepower/ So don't feel bad if you get the G80 6MT - it's most certainly a 500+hp car!!! Not long ago this was 911 GT3-level power. Trust me, it's plenty! (EDIT: The current 991.2 GT3 has 502hp - although that might be the best drivers' car with a manual transmission ever made, but I digress. Also, it costs nearly $200k as typically equipped assuming you could even find one!)

When the G8X was revealed, I was not a fan of the front-end but seeing them in person I've come to really like it now. I felt the same way about Audi grilles in 2005, and Lexus grilles in 2011. Prior M3 generations never received different front fascia's throughout the lifecycle, even when the non-M versions did. IMO I'm not so sure there is a business case for it, but I'd bet they'll change lights and maybe the grille insert pattern. We all have an opinion, but truth is these cars will continue to sell, especially M3/4 cars that are already low volume. I'm sure BMW knew it could make a bold styling choice on the M3/4 and that there would be enough demand to sell every last one, especially being the last ICE M3/4.

Haha. I had a B8.5 and the supercharger was freaking fun, the throttle response was second to none. And it sounded like a Wookie/GTR hybrid with the AWE.

I agree. I am very close to get a MY23 G80. But now, I decide to hold my order and see what will happen. If they put the front of 3.0 CSL on G8X, that is a fantastic update.

I would MUCH rather they figure out how to shoehorn in some EV motors AND keep the i6. Give me a 700 hp hybrid monster where I can make a 20 mile round trip grocery run on electric power only. Or even a version like some manufacturers do where it's EV-only for reverse, and hybrid on any forward driving. Unfortunately, due to size constraints, (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) the most likely configuration where that happens becomes similar to the Corvette - the M4 becomes a mid engine platform. Given BMW's investment into the CLAR architecture, I don't see that happening anytime soon, so a 4-cylinder hybrid becomes the logical conclusion.

Still 100% against that front end look but it is an awesome car to drive. I won't be a buyer but hopefully it comes with some good improvements.

I would love to see inline 6 as an option in the next generation M3/4. But with proposed ICE sale restriction from several countries and also states, its highly unlikely that BMW would have I6 as an option especially when competitors are taking 4 cylinder hybrid approach.

And if you consider that they recently extended the production of the current gen by 2 years, this could be already the confirmation that they ditch the Hybrid. It does not make sense for them to bring a completely new generation as a hybrid in 2029 where most countries will ban any new ICE powered cars in 2030/32. Hybrids just became some stopgap cars for manufacturers to reduce their overall company emissions until they have some proper EV platforms…I doubt there will be much more R&D in that direction. |
