About to purchase a g82 in stock, it's has everything I want but I don't think it has drive recorder. This used to be included in the parking assist package, is it no longer included? Anyway to add this later?

YES bmw removed the drive recorder from the 2023's Parking Assist Package. But if you go to the bmw connected store, it's $150 to add the option to your apps as long as you have the parking assist package for the cameras

Yeah, for some reason, they made the Parking Assistance package $100 cheaper, then made the Drive Recorder a separate option. You DO need the Parking Assistance package though, if you don’t already have the cameras, the recorder won’t have anything to record with.

Great! Take the $100 and use that towards actual, reliable dashcams. Drive recorder is "nice to have" but I most certainly won't rely on it. In fact, when I was recently bumped from the rear, I realize, only as I type this, that I neglected to trigger a recording in drive recorder in the heat of the moment. Of course, my actual dashcam was reliable.

Yes, but it was such a tiny bump that all there was was two license plate edge indents on the gloss black plastic trim on the rear bumper. Cost me $700 at the dealer to replace (apparently they misquoted labor at 1.5 hours instead of 4.5 hours but they honored the 1.5). Still need to redo PPF on that tiny bit at $200.

To your question, it was a non-event to the drive recorder. My dashcam also has separate battery backup for all-day parking recording. Drive recorder is one of those checkbox options for me. It started with my X5 where someone nearly sideswiped me at 300 miles. When I tried to trigger the drive recorder, it acted as though it had never been initialized and that really pissed me off. Not reliable enough for me where tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands in liability may swing one way or the other based on evidence.

What dash cam did you go with? Do we have a thread for dash cams somewhere? Been debating the same thing with drive recorder...

I walked out of my office two weeks ago to find that someone performed a hit & run on my M3 Comp (when I parked far away from everyone - honestly wild how it happened but luckily with some security cameras and local PD they were able to track the individual down). A nice big dent in the passenger door.

The BMW Drive Recorder didn't record the event because it didn't pick up the detection of someone hitting me

Can't say I'm a fan of the technology...

Hmmmm. I'm comparing it to the Vantrue N4...Vantrue looks equivalent for half the price? What'd you cross shop? Surprisingly doesn't look like much dash cam discussion happening down in the electronics subforum.

It's not that it didn't record because it didn't pick up the detection of the hit, it's that it won't record when the car is off. You'd need a hardwired or battery operated dashcam for that.

I have this same setup as well. Was hit in my 21" G80 all the way down the passenger side while driving and the drive recorder didn't capture any of it even though I had it set to auto record when it detected a "hit". So I got a 22" and still have drive recorder but got a secondary for piece of mind. Also, I like that it records when it's parked having the secondary battery.

I should share pics of my setup at some point. Weekend maybe. This is my third BlackVue and I know how to install it like OEM (concealed and all that without pulling any trim or splicing any wiring). Vantrue doesn’t seem like it will blend into the background like a BlackVue could. Quality of video is probably in the same ballpark. There are great comparisons on YouTube of many brands.

My biggest pet peeves.
Looks like the SUV has his lane clear but decides to cut in front of you to be between traffic. I swear they do it on purpose. Absolutely hate little ego shit drivers like this
