2023 BMW M4 COMP VS 2022 M440i - Thunderhill Track
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com Please note that the M4 is running bypass that changes the lap time to around 2 seconds vs the m440i running standard. But overall in the video, you can see the handling difference and speed difference. M440i does have the M-Performance Exhaust Handling wise the M4 felt like it was planted to the ground way more than the M440i. Speed wise I was able to get a 10MPH higher top speed in the M4 vs the M440i. Top speed on the track M440i = 130mph M4 Comp = 140mph Lap Difference M440i = 2:17 (the video was 2:20 couldn't find the video of 2:17) M4 Comp = 2:07 (bypass but with the standard I got 2:10) Specs M4 Competition: Base (Rear wheel, no carbon-ceramic, no bucket seat, no M driver professional, tire = Pzero) M440i: Base (Rear wheel, no cooling and high-performance tire package, Tire =Pzero front, Tire = P4S Rear) Notes: Track both cars are fun. The M440i tires did overheat a lot faster than the M4. Would recommend the cooling and high-performance tire package if you are going to track. The M440i tires reached 200F when the outside temp was 50F after 5 laps. BMW M4 tire temps reached the max of 140F outside temp was 45F. The tire tread wore down better on M4 vs M440i. [edit 2/11/23 11:51 AM PST] This video has both on standard 3 mile. These aren't the best laps tho but better comparison Last edited by Cooper Takaki; 02-11-2023 at 01:52 PM.. |

I remember when I taught I could do my track season with my M340i, first track day at Le Circuit Mont Tremblant oh god it was a pain.
The car had 255 square Supercar3, bigger sway bars, pads and I even had a quick fit harness to hold me in the seat. Car was kind of fast, I was as fast as with my 2018 M2. The thing is the feeling was terriblez the confidence lacking, the car was all over the place, the suspension couldn't cope with the loads and added grip by these more aggressive tires, fast it was but not confidence inspiring and very tiresome to drive. I sold the car and baught the first G8X I could find. A good feeling car is a fine balancing act.

Good apples to apples comparison. I think a more optioned-out M440 with xdrive might have closed the gap by a couple more seconds to the base, but by the same token, an optioned-out xdrive M4 would widen the gap again.

If you track a car without Bucket seats you'll understand how hard it is to stay in your seat. I don't think you'll get a 2:00 but it will definitely be easier to focus on driving. @Forzanerazzurri
If i get bucket seats I'll let you know if my lap changes Last edited by Cooper Takaki; 02-10-2023 at 12:21 PM.. |

I was planning on getting an xDrive M440i with a tire and cooling package but I decided on the M4. I bet if it was xDrive and tire and cooling package I could have gotten a bit better time closer to the M4 comp. But the big issue I had with the M4 on getting a better lap time was grip on turns. It's way better than the M440i. But if I had Cup 2 tires or actual race tires it would definitely perform a lot better. Also debating on getting a bucket seat for the driver with a harness setup. When sliding around in your seat while trying to focus on driving definitely makes it a lot harder to focus on the track. I'm going to Laguna Seca next and I already have a video from the M440i so we will see how much better with the M4 on that track. Might put Pilot sport S or Cup 2 in the rear. Before going to Laguna - Laguna is in California. |

driven both on road and track, m4 is miles better in every performance espect. It's not worth modding m440, you'll never get there. I think m440 is dissipointing when it comes to performance largely due to lack of front and rear tire sizes (225), they aren't wide enough for the vehicle of this weight so they lack mechanical grip and also there's noticable body lean.

ukr I agree the M4 is 1000 times better than the M440i especially in turning it is night and day difference. M440i is a fun daily but not a track car

I have an M4 comp with xdrive now and I'm looking forward to hitting Laguna Seca at some point in the near future with it, but haven't taken it to a track just yet. I have no doubt it'll be better, but the M440 was no slouch, either.

When are you hitting Laguna? And is it for an open lap track day or HPDE type thing?

Private track group for laguna. Was thinking of doing Thunderhill again next month but going to hold off because of tires.

Even if you put 275 sticky tires on a 440 (if you could) the chassis and suspension will be totally overwhelmed.
You can't have it all, my M340i was a wonderful daily tough.
