Would you not want an Xdrive m4? This trade only makes sense for a spec exactly you are looking for. You're not in a rush either I'd try and go see iDrive 8 and see if that's something you'd want also either in i4 or local 3 series. Since 24 M4 has that now.

I have driven both extensively, M8 is a much higher quality vehicle. It would be tough to downgrade to an M4. With that said I can tell you the M4 is a wonderful vehicle but it will feel cheap and less refined. If you are not planning on tracking the vehicle I would keep the M8.

OP, I was in a situation 6 months back deciding between my current G82 M4 Comp and a used (non CPO) 2020 M8 Comp. They were about $12k apart in total, not worlds apart. I had already extensively driven the G82 previously, having sold my first at a market high. I regretted selling almost instantly, best car I’ve owned. I was granted a lengthy test drive of the M8 to get a feel before deciding between the 2.
Comparing the 2, the M8 is obviously quicker (though, not by as large a margin as you might think), a total cruise missle. Sounded great, luxurious, but for me really lacked the engagement I needed out of vehicle. Felt too big to thread in and out of traffic. Like an athletic Hippo. I always thought I’d be into the performance GT game (grew up loving Aston Martin DB cars) and thought the M8 would get me a more modern, Germanic equivalent. Turns out, I prefer more of a dynamic feeling ride. Lots of comments here about the M4 being a downgrade. I don’t think that’s the case. They serve different purposes. I never felt that my choice of the M4 over the M8 was in anyway a step backwards. Especially in isolation, the M4 feels plenty quality inside, actually has a more usable interior and trunk volume, better fuel efficiency (for range), easier to park, better aftermarket support as stated, and perhaps a larger audience for resale down the road if you don’t trade in.

I recently just sold my stage 2 2020 M8 comp to purchase an M3CX. I loved the M8 it was a beast in terms it looks and performance. Main reason I am making the change is due to the aftermarket support for the G8x platform. I want a car that’s a bit more raw and I hope I don’t regret this decision since I haven’t driven the G8x yet. I am next of the waitlist at my dealer. Can’t wait! Would love to know what you like and dislike about the G8x over the M8. No doubt I’ll miss my non reasonated exhaust setup 🥹

It’s the better platform imo. But, M3/4 are also not small cars anymore. Just looked at the m3 vs my wife’s mdx… I shit you not, they are just about the same length. They were 2 cars apart, and I was just eyeballing it, but i was shocked that they each seemed to take up about the same amount of garage space. Obviously the m3 has a lower roofline, but the length and girth is large. Again, I actually like this. The backseat is very comfortable in this car, and I assume the m4 will be plenty large enough for you, while giving you just enough sportiness over the m8 to be happy. I actually like it, a lot. But please nothing bigger BMW! Any bigger and I’m gonna be larger than my wife’s suv lol. |

Well, I told the dealer that I wanted to do the trade, so this Saturday I drive the M8 to the dealer and come home with an M4.

If you don't need a back seat and have the funds to purchase a M8 cash, get a 911. You will never look back.

I thought about it but the one I would want is a newer Turbo S and those are way more than the M4. I'm going to get the M4 and upgrade the turbos and run port injection on it and make it a 9 second car.

hahah yeah I figured. But just like you didnt ask there because of the bias I would be careful with the bias here.
I've had both the G80 and now the F90 (very similar to the M8) and Ill just say that both cars are amazing in their own right. It seems as if modding is a huge deal for you so I think you are making the right decision. As far as driving dynamics go, I wouldnt go so far to say the M3 is miles ahead of its big brothers. Its more nimble and lighter yes but also more numb IMO. I made the switch because I wanted to try something new and the bucket seats were tough to deal with for a daily and Im very happy I did but I will reiterate - Both cars are GREAT and you will be happy in both. Doesnt hurt that the M3 with just a few mods can be faster than almost any car you encounter. Best of luck!! |

Hope you enjoy it, OP. Keep us updated on the mods once you get the M4! I think most of us enjoy the process of making a car your own.

Oh yeah for sure, that's one of the biggest reasons I want to do this swap, so I can mod it like I want it. I just don't want to mod the M8.
