I wouldn't. To the average person, the M8 is still plenty sporty and far more luxurious & attractive than the 4.

$15,000 isn't a large sum of money, especially when you are looking into aftermarket mods that typically won't bring back much money at the end.

I'd keep the M8. Mod it a bit perhaps, carbon high kick spoiler, air intakes, exhaust. Lot of car for the money. M4s similar to the M8 have a lot of room to depreciate too

The average person hasn’t had a much, or any seat time in the M8. More power/more expensive isn’t always better. The M8 is for someone that doesn’t really care about the driving experience. And, FWIW, $15k was what I got when I sold my M8 off lease, and it went to good use, back into my business.

You’re obviously bored with the M8…

M4 driving experience is going to be much more exciting and still comfortable!

$15,000 is something.

When you get the M4 try and contain yourself. Simple mods will surpass the power of the stock M8

Just try not to get in trouble with the M4 it’s absolutely going to encourage bad behavior.

Early congratulations on the M4.

This seems like the x factor in OP's decision making.

I bet if there was no 15k, OP would keep the M8.

The feeling of trying something new, plus having cash on top, of course it draws interest. That's how our brains are wired.

If someone said they'll give me 15k plus a 2023 M340I for my M3 (keeping any market values out of it), i would consider it strongly, just as OP is considering his situation strongly.

It really all depends on what you want from the car. If you're not tracking it, and using it for a daily, then i don't know why anyone would go down to an M4 from an M8. Plus the sound, the power delivery. It's just a big ass comfy couch with a big ol powerful V8. That obviously appeals to many otherwise they'd get rid of those types of cars.

OP, i know how the feeling, because i want to do the opposite. I want to get rid of my M3 for an M5 however i'm waiting to see what the G90 looks like. I like the M3 and it's a damn good car but it's a waste to not put these M3/M4's on a track. That's what they're good at. Street driving is secondary.

Another factor should be that the M4 is not new and its 400 miles away. If the OP bought the M8 new, he knows everything that has happened to it versus whatever has happened to the M4 in the last two-ish years.

The dealer's offer feels like an attempt to move a car they can't move. I would seriously want to know why.

Has anyone done this? Would I be making a mistake?
Do it. There's more room and usable space, it's lighter which you'll feel. You'd definitely need full merino leather though so it doesn't feel too downmarket. Plus now they have the new tech. There's no reason to keep a 2020 IMO.

I personally think the M8 value is highly questionable so take my comments with a grain of salt.

Thanks for the opinions guys. My biggest thing with this whole situation is I feel like I would have more fun in the M4, the M8 is just a third car and just a second play car. It feels like it should be a daily cruiser to me and the M4 would be a lighter feeling more fun car to drive. Plus I would mod the hell out of it, upgraded turbos, port injection etc...

Financially, trading a used car for another like this does not seem like a great deal.

That aside, find someone local with the seats to try first. It can be a challenge getting in and out of them, especially if you are at or approaching senior status.

My opinion, having driven both cars, is that the M4 is a better car in nearly every respect.

Thanks, that's what I'm looking for, people who have driven both and can give me reviews of each.

Well ... let me offer a different angle. I own a G42 M240i as well as a 23 M8 Competition with everything but the carbon seats. Previously owned a F80 M3 comp, C7Z06, 992C2S. The M8 is in it's own league. Looks, luxury, V8 power all second to none. Yes - smaller cars are more "nimble" .. but for what?? If you are looking for a car you can squeeze out and toss around - get a manual Miata! Check out a European BMW website. My $160k M8 is >$220k in Europe. We are getting a heck of deal! A used M4 +$15k for the M8 ... no thanks!

Whatever one might think M4 is a significant downgrade in nearly every aspect to M8 and price itself reflects that. They are two different cars nonetheless and it’s only YOU that can decide which one is best for YOU. You will sacrifice comfort V8 interior quality and prestige for driving dynamics. My .02

Setting the 15k aside, because it honestly sounds like a honey pot to me. It boils down to you wanting to have more modding options and also more driver engagement or fun. If that is ultimately what you want, then I'd so go for it so long as the M4 is in good condition and makes sense. Like BGM-M3COMP said, if you're not going hard into back roads or the track, if you're not using that driving feeling difference a whole lot, M8 makes more sense. Better cruising, better soundtrack, better luxury, ballistic speed, and it's still a relatively decent car to drive. Those factors play in the back of my mind and I have a lot of days where I think to my self "maybe I should have gotten the M8 instead". I love driver engagement but I also am a normal guy that can't go to the backroads or track every single day. So when I'm cruising, I'd rather be in a v8 GT. The M8 is still a fun car in my honest opinion. Especially after the recent seat time I've had in one.

Of course in a perfect world, we'd just own both but then this thread wouldn't be a thing now would it?

Hey Vic55 , mind if we ask for your thoughts on this?

Surely we have someone near OP with an M4 he can get some seat time with? Trade cars and go for a drive together?

Go look at how many people are trying to get out of their leases on swap a lease on the M8, and look at how long they are staying on the site.

M8’s literally lose 20k the second you drive off the lot.

I would too if the m4 is in good shape and they don't play any games.

Your car is 4 years old now, good time to get something more fresh.
