Thinking of going from M8 Comp to M4 Comp

I have a 2020 M8 Comp that we paid cash for so we own it outright. A dealer offered me a 2021 M4 Comp for my M8 and $15,000 on top. One of the reasons I am thinking about doing this is the M4 seems to be a little more mod friendly and there seems to be more of an aftermarket for them, plus $15,000 in the bank would be nice.

Has anyone done this? Would I be making a mistake?

M8 is an absolute beast in my opinion....but so is the M4. I'd be more comfortable flogging the M4 than the M8, and as you said mods are more plentiful so if that's your thing you'll definitely have a lot more options (Carbahn stuff should be dropping in the next 2 months!!!).

If you're thinking about tracking it I'd definitely swap down, but if you're just hitting twisties, cruising, etc, meh just keep the M8 since it's already paid off. Just my $0.02.

(I do love my M4 comp, but haven't experienced the M8 comp so I can't fully speak to first hand experience).

Good choice.
I don’t know why people buy the m8.

It’s just so big and heavy and if you are spending that much… I can’t see it.

M4 is a much more attractive car imo.

$15k is not a lot either way, so I’d go with the car you like more. For me that’s the m4 by a country mile.

Yeah that is thing, I'm heavy into modding cars and I just really don't want to mod the M8. Plus with it having more aftermarket it just seems like it would be a better choice. I wouldn't mind modding the hell out of the M4 but for some reason I just can't bring myself to mod the M8 much.

I just feel like it would be a more fun car, I want to mod the M8 but just can't bring myself to do it. The M8 is a great car and it's pretty fast stock but like you said it's heavy and feels heavy driving it.

I mean just by nature of sales figures / quantity there will be more aftermarket options for the M4, but since it shares a lot with the M3 that magnifies your options even more.

If you're wanting to mod something and bring it to shows / race the piss out of it on the track, I'd absolutely jump to the M4.

I’ve posted this before, I had a 2020 M8 Comp and aside from the incredible acceleration (and some additional luxury stuff) it was very boring. I sold it after driving it for about 15 months and ordered an M4 Comp xDrive without ever driving one, and I’ve been happy ever since. It’s not that much lighter, but it sure feels like it is. Definitely seems a LOT more nimble. And, it’s almost as quick, though the exhaust note sounds a little better in the M8.

Thanks, this is the feedback I am looking for. I love the M8, it's a nice car and pretty quick but like you it seems boring to me and I'd love to have more aftermarket options.

Does anyone have any experience with the carbon bucket seats? The car I'm looking at has them.

OP, does the 21 have full leather? Important note here, you would find the interior a significant step down if it only has extended

Yeah I would. I have not owned an M8 but having driven them at various race tracks, I find them to be too heavy and not engaging to drive. Much prefer the handling, performance and driving engagement of the M3/M4.

I wish there was an M4 close to me I could drive and feel the difference but I feel like I understand what you are saying when you say they feel heavy.

My M8 had full, and my M4 has extended and I could not care less. Full leather is so overrated.

Can't you test drive the one you are looking at?

I'd pass. That's a dealer tactic--offer you a sweet pot until you show up, then suddenly your car isn't worth as much or needs this and that. That 15k "on top" could quickly turn into something much less. They kinda have you on the spot since you drove 400 miles. Proceed with caution.

If they pulled something like that I'd just get back in my car and drive back home.

Anecdotal: I moved from a M240 to an M440 and it was a huge mistake, I missed the nimbleness of the M240. Fast forward to my M4 Convertible and the fact that my dream car is an M8 Convertible. I won’t make that change until I’m ready to move on from the nimbleness to more luxury.
