You’re just feeling the 500lb+ weight difference and smaller brakes.
If you owned a base 911 it would feel closer to the M3. Some of the new 911s ,especially AWD, weigh as much or more.
I would agree the M8 is just a fast luxury car. It’s a pig.
No csl needed. A base m3 smokes a 718 (I have both).

You can’t,
I didn’t find the m3 compelling vs the m3cx.
And honestly, as stated… the whole package just doesn’t feel sporty.

I think BMW made the right choice with the zf as it completely fits the cagaracter of the g80. I don’t need a mt in this car.

Would it be more sporty than a zf?
Obviously.

Would it change my overall vibe from the cx… idk, but I suspect not terribly. A stick shift along doesn’t make a car sporty.

Yea, again… I think that’s the focus all too often, speed. A bullet train smokes a 718 and an m3 and a 911 turbo s.

But, it doesn’t mean it’s fun and sporty to ride in.

Am I though? A tiny dedicated sports car is more sporty than a sedan. Do you really think you're covering new ground here? This is literally every other thread here and if it didn't start out as that, it somehow turns into that.

Sorry. I can’t help myself.
Could be lol!
Idk, I haven’t ridden in the m4.

Does it really feel that different?
I needed the doors so, again I bought the car for family carriage.

I guess I was a little surprised as to how laid back the car is overall since it is billed as kind of the car to beat, or maybe it WAS billed that way for awhile.

I think automotive journalists have actually been pretty honest about this gen m3, what it is and what it isn’t. I tended to disbelieve them that the m3 character had changed and was a little uninspired.

I wouldn’t personally use that term but I see where they are coming from with their write ups.

If you want drama, switch into MDM or better yet RWD mode and turn the TC down to 3 or 4 (assuming you optioned the M drive professional).

Some of your frustration may also come down to the adage that "it's more fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow". So if you want to have fun in a car with M3 capabilities you need to drive faster, or at least induce some oversteer.

Cool,
That is an excellent suggestion and one I admit I have not tried!

I think that I’m leaning towards… a sedan is just not the platform for a sports car, but you are 100% right in that I need to at least try every option.

Again, I actually like the car a good amount. I was just surprised by how it made me feel, overall. I remember driving that e39 and it was heaven to me. I thought it was a very fun, very sporty car. I don’t get those same vibes and I thought I would get more of them just by virtue of it being “M”.

But that’s maybe an incorrect assumption.

So you’re comparing a 2 seater go kart to a family sedan?

Ahh, the beauty of the internet. I do what I want and judging by your drivel I don't have to make sense. So here we both are, learning how things work.

People buy Caymans, Boxsters and 911s to park in the garage most days, but to take out for spirited drives on nice days, drive to date nights, and hard park at the local cars and coffees. And maybe to track.

People buy M3s and M4s as daily drivers (mostly) and to have fun, tech and style while doing it. And maybe to track.

I should know. I've owned a Cayman, a Boxster and a 911. I'm driving my M4 more than I did all of those cars combined. I guess it all depends on what you're looking for.

I’ve only had it to 100, and not really done that much in it. I am talking subjectively here on how it feels to be in moving around, but you are correct… I have not explored the vehicle’s limits in any direction.

What I am experiencing may be what the writers say is a lack of engagement due to how refined the ride is at this point. It might be that “sports car” = drama to me.

I have no doubt that the actual ability of the car is mind boggling. I hope what I said makes sense. I don’t think anyone would argue that the m3 is more capable than the 718. It certainly feels very capable, but it lacks… drama.

Maybe that’s really what I am saying.
I think once you finish break in and put the car in M2 mode (full sport settings with DCS off) you’ll be amazed at how it transforms the car.

I have a RWD manual ‘22 G80 M3 and before that a ‘21 G82 manual M4.

The car handles like it’s on rails, stops incredibly well and hazes the tires in third gear. It’s ridiculously capable.

Puttering around in standard mode waiting for your break-in service would definitely make it feel like a luxury car in comparison.

I’m sure my old GT3RS will loose a drag race. But I’ll find out which one is quicker around Thunderhill.

Pretty much. The car is night and day between the break in period and the post break in with everything dialed to 10.

To the OP, I would also suggest watching some of the videos on the M YouTube channel that goes through the engineering of the M3. Yeah some of it is just marketing but it's really well done and explains a lot of what went into the engineering of the car.
Things like the engine components, chassis details, cooling systems, brakes, aero, suspension components and even the work that goes into something as simple as the driveshaft are all what you would classify as "sports car".
There is a ton of engineering that goes into these cars well above and beyond what a regular sedan or even a luxury sedan would typically have.
I mean what do you think you are paying for when you pay 3x the price of a Camry for this thing. If I was an engineer reading this thread I would either laugh or cry.

Gt3rs totally different animal than a 718 cayman. Which is a great little sports car but not particularly quick (and maybe that’s part of the fun.)
