JB4 Map 2 hesitation

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hey guys so I had the JB4 installed the other day. I’m running Map 2. My mods are as follows: MST intakes, Evolution Racewerks 200cell high flow catted down pipes, Active Autowerks single non resonated mid pipe and Valvetronic axle back exhaust. I’m running 94 octane. I love the power increase compared to stock but on full throttle it seems like the car hesitates initially a split second then it takes off. Anybody else experience this feeling?

Could it be turbo lag? I have the manual one and thats normal, usually from 2nd to 3rd right?

Try checking what your safety boost is set to, I had to turn mine up to 30 to prevent it from going back to map 0 every time I went WOT..

How do I do that? Is it in the JB4 app and if so where? Mine still stays at Map 2 and doesn’t go back to Map 0 when I go WOT.

Are you talking from a stop and just flooring it without brake boost or launch control, or while driving and WOT?

From a stop without LC or brake boost they neutered the boost in 1st. brake boost it and its a totally different animal.

If you're running a JB4, do some data logs and post. Much better using actual data than just internet guessing.

On a roll while I'm driving. I changed the setting to increase safety boost to 32 but still did it this morning. I think it's probably the turbo lag. Just seem more prominent with the JB4 compared to stock. Will do some data logs this weekend and send it to Burger. I want to see if I'm safe to run MAP 3 with my setup anyway. So I need them to look at my Data logs anyway.

If your JB4 isn't resetting to map 0 its not boost safety. Need logs to really figure it out. JB4 wouldn't cause additional turbo lag, but could cause throttle closures and timing retardation, which could cause delays in full power, although its more common to feel the power come on, then fall flat.

I ran a JB4 on my M4 before I unlocked and am now running it on my X3M. I wouldn't run map 3 at all. I ran maps 2 and 4 on M4, and keep it on map 1 with X3M. Power delivery is inconsistent and non linear, and that annoys me. JB4 is a nifty little device, but I don't feel safe trying to make large power increases on it. All it does it trick the ECU into adding boost and hopes it adds additional fuel to compensate.

If you're trying to make big power gains Id recommend unlock and tune. Its safer, more reliable, consistent, and easier to make gains.

Not looking to make huge gains. Just wanted a little extra power. I don't want to unlock my DME. This is my daily driver. The only time the MAP changes to 0 is when I restart the car. During driving it stays on MAP 2. Don't you need higher octane fuel to run MAP 4? I think with my 93/94 octane I can only run MAP 2 or MAP 3.

Map 3 is an additive E30 map. Definitely don't run that with 93. Map 4 is also listed as an E30 map, but its not nearly as aggressive as Map 3. It shouldn't reset to map 0 when turning off the car either.

Maps 1-3 are additive while map 4 and 5 are absolute. 1-3 just add boost to the ecu target, whereas 4 and 5 change the target. Map 6 is a custom map that you can make changes to.

Logging and sending to BMS is the right answer though. They'll get you sorted.

Thanks for the insight. I will do some logging and send to BMS before running any other MAP than 2. The only time my MAP changes is when I am away from the car, lock it and then get in it. I think there is a setting in the JB4 app to keep it set to the last MAP I ran but I think I don't have that checked off.

Couple things, make sure your firmware is up to date number 1, secondly make sure you have done the proper adaptations before thinking you have an issue. PM me if you need help I run private JB4 FB group ne we have a lot of guys who are running very fast and very happy 👍

Would love to but this is my daily so I can’t be down a couple days if not more to send ECU out to get unlocked then the tune. Not looking for crazy gains also. Just need that extra pep. Not racing or tracking the car.

When I had jb4 it had that strong lag feeling before taking off like a rat up a drain pipe.

JB4 never ran smoothly for me on any car. Even after revisions/ recommendations from Burger. Ended up selling it and getting ECU unlocked because I couldn't stand the inconsistency.
