Just remember the cost for bucket seats after the fact is like $30,000 or something like that. I've seen trades that are standard seats + $12,000 for a set of buckets.

Yeah it's ridiculous, but I've heard it's because the seats are made in house by BMW.

Yeah…

Some have money to burn.

If you parted out an M3 I'm sure it's $200K

If you got $30K to buy seats you're probably trading in your car to get them instead

I think they intentionally priced it that way to make it cost-prohibitive for those wanting to swap out the seats.

Well, assuming they don't actually cost something near $30K to manufacture, and assuming they are able to manufacture enough to meet demand, shouldn't they have priced them more reasonably? Lower price would mean more people buying them from BMW to swap in when they regretted not ordering them from the start. Selling four front seats for a single car seems like a way to increase profit.

Thinking out loud -- it's not just the cost of manufacturing the part.

It's storage, warranty issues, shipping, possibly covering labor for any warranty issues, laying out cash for any liability issues, etc. And then retaining an additional profit on top.

Then there are other considerations like keep the parts out of reach of vehicles the seats were never optional equipment on. Some of the pricing may be to compensate for low supply - a new car sold with the seats is more valuable than an old car getting seats, and a new car being delayed for the parts.

If someone could find out how much standard seats actually cost to fully replace, it may seem like the delta may not be as high as we think.

Straight swap sounds fair, seats are preference and not really worth the extra premium.

All good points - but I guess I'm still assuming (admittedly based on no data) that the cost of warehousing is built in to that $30K price, like it would be with any part that spends time in a warehouse between manufacturer and end consumer. Shipping on a bulky item can be pricey - but I would also assume that shipping fees would be additional, again just like they are on any other part I might order, large or small. And if I was BMW I would definitely prioritize use in new car builds over aftermarket sales to someone wanting to swap seats. I think those items at least are easy to factor in.

But the most interesting points are those warranty/liability/"exclusivity" questions - who knows how many of these installs a dealer might botch...and no idea what the warranty burden on them is, how often they're "failing" and needing replacement. Finally, it might be worth it to BMW's brand to keep these out of a Honda Civic, haha...in which case $30K is probably doing a fine job of that.

Maybe I should be camping out at junkyards waiting for G8xs to arrive, hopefully destroyed but for their mint condition carbon buckets...only needs to happen once...

Straight swap is not fair because whoever gets the carbon buckets will have made out like a bandit in that deal. They cost $4500 (now $5500 iirc) more from the factory, and I expect the difference is much larger between the parts at the parts counter.

The only win-win portion of the deal is that neither party needs to now sell their old seats. The lose-lose portion is that they're now in a pickle if they have any warranty issues associated with the seats.

A fair deal would be standard seats (great condition) + price delta = carbon seats (equivalent great condition). If the market bears a $12K price difference (as someone above said), then that's what the price delta portion is.

Weird/bad. Though I wonder if a good upholsterer could replace the Silverstone greys with a matching Tartufo hide?

Before everyone gets too excited about the Money and trade specifics, has this been done and do we know its a PNP swap?

Some cars have ventilated seats, theres a lot more motorized adjustment in the sport seats than in the buckets. Is the plug the same? Will the computer need to be reprogrammed?

Just my thoughts.

In for answer

Also, has OP stated expectation? Is this a straight swap?

You do realize just because one moron paid 12k for seats that were worth a fraction of that does not dictate the price of an item on the market right? Like that’s not how economics works. I can easily say the guy who sold his buckets + 12k “ran off like a bandit” as well. The seats are an additional 4k from the factory but that does not mean the OEM seats are worth $0 and I’d have to pay someone 4k for theirs, let alone 12k. I thought there would be a higher class of people driving these cars but it looks like a Honda Civic forum of people trying to make a few thousand dollars by selling their seats. I don’t buy into hype, I don’t pay over retail. If you’re paying 12k for buckets you definitely paid 20k markup on your car. The carbon is not made my Rolex, don’t make it seem like it is. The cars residual will remain 50%, it’s just a BMW let’s relax.

Cheers

You're better off financing a car with carbon buckets, swapping them into your car, and then selling that one with the standard seats.

I bet you'd lose less than $30k doing that :-p
