I ordered with a moonroof, TBII, full tartufo, M4cx. I'm an open roof fan on occasion. I'm not planning on tracking, so the weight issue, isn't. Should I want a CF look, I can wrap it, but doubt that I'd be able to install a aftermarket on a CF top. YMMV, and it's why they're called options..

The point I am trying to make is sunroof has the functionality, the CF has zero functionality for 99% of us. What you are describing above is totally irrelevant to me, I can care less if someone is posing or driving a real G80.

1% would benefit if slightly lower CG on track and slightly more headroom without (open) sunroof!
I see your point, but you know people do this.
It’s human nature.

99% of the people with M cars are not tracking anyway, so by definition it’s a status purchase.

Makes sense that the trend would continue to options. A lot of the M factor is, look at me!

I’m not immune to that, it’s part of why I bought it over a 340i.

That’s just life baby!

Yes, I evaluate every car I see on the road. Is that Tesla a bleh one or a Perf or a Plaid? Helps me know what I need to do if I want to pass it. Same story for BMWs. And I'm also happy to see one of the club. I've not seen G8X franken builds, but I've seen some convincing F8X ones and then see the one or two things that give it away. And yes, it matters to me because I admire the genuine article and don't admire fakes.

Let me repeat this: to each his own. I think non-CF roof cars are diluted. Like a G8X with all seasons instead of performance summers and performance winters is also diluted. I think it's not intellectually honest to pretend otherwise. You're of course entitled to a different opinion and I'm not challenging whatever you want to think.

Which is your right to do.

Left it body-colored, and it looks good.

My (prior) favorite of the cars I’ve owned was a 650 convertible… I don’t live in Vegas anymore, but I also couldn’t resist the option to have at least part of the roof open. Wasn’t about to go with a convertible in Quebec though, so moonroof it is.

I went with sunroof but swapped out the red shark-fin with a CF shark fin - that minor tweak makes it look perfect, IMO

Wait, are moonroof and sunroof different options?? I have moonroof on my spec (but want a sunroof). Going to be really bummed if I can’t open it. I don’t remember seeing two distinct options though, or I definitely would’ve chosen sunroof.

I use them interchangeably… I don’t think there are two options, and it definitely opens

Although….it’s one of the least opening sunroofs I’ve ever had. It literally opens just past halfway when full opened.

I've had all of my previous cars with a sun roof. Its noisy, its heavy and it reduces the headroom. On a sports car, albeit a luxury one, in my opinion its pointless to have it.

I stripped out my E90 335i sedan and turned it into a dedicated hdpe and autox car. I personally weighed every single part I took off the car.

I can tell you that the entire sunroof cassette with rails, motor, glass, drain channels and hardware weighs 47lbs. That's a lot of weight and what's worse is that it is the furthest possible distance from the center of gravity in the car.

To truly understand what that means, imagine 45lbs dumbbell on a 4ft pole exerting torque. That's a lot of torque wanting to induce roll over.

In your example….now imagine there’s 3850 lbs at the base of the 4ft pole. The effects of that 45 lb dumbbell at the opposite end would not have much consequence against the 3850 lbs.

Like so many things (color, wheel choice, etc, etc)…..the decision to option the sunroof is purely subjective. To each their own….there’s not a right or wrong decision.

Thank you for making me feel slightly better about not optioning the moonroof. Seriously, I went back and forth for literally months before finally deciding on the slicktop. And even after that, continued to second-guess myself.

Agree!

Most people could care less if you have an M or a 3 series. And most don’t even know the difference unless you are into cars. Our cars are souped up 3 series and that’s all.

With the M badge on so many non true M’s, the brand is watered down anyways unfortunately.

I personally love the CF roof. I never felt the need to open the sunroof/moonroof on any of my cars. I like the sporty look of the CF roof and I would pick CF over sunroof every time.

You're already paying for an expensive carbon fiber roof - I could not be at peace unchecking that option.

I have the moonroof on mine and had one on the F82 I traded in for it. I often tilt it up for ventilation particularly on a freeway when I don't need the A/C. I like the looks of the roof in body color rather than the black carbon fiber, especially with IOMG and the Tartufo interior.

My last few DD cars had no sunroof, so I ordered no sunroof. I didn't use the sunroof much at all.
