I thought so too. But then I looked back at my buddy’s 2022 g80 m3 pictures from January 2022 and I’m seeing the blue section illumating. So I’m so confused hahaha

As you can see, first pic from bayoptiks in Ca with the blue section illumating and second pic doesn’t have it.

They do illuminate. Here is a "short" I did a while back. US-spec car. Same on 2022 and 2023 models

It's likely the angle, since it's just a strip that's only visible from the top and not the side. Our vision deceives us haha

Correct. Only difference between US and RoW is that the RoW illuminate blue, while in the US it's white due to emergency vehicle light laws not permitting the use of blue lighting in front.

I've noticed the main reason we probably don't notice it immediately is because the white somewhat blends in due to how it lights up white like the DRLs, while RoW have it lit in a contrasting colour (blue) which make it stand out more.

Confirmed with my buddy since I’m currently waiting on mine to get here. But the blue part with the illumination is on when the headlights are on or parking lights are on. Most of the owners would not even noticed this since they’re behind the wheel. Normal locking and unlocking with the drl on will not have the illumination.

Rare photo of the blue part actually lit up. Have to say it looks very cool.

To be completely honest, seeing a G8x without the Laser lights is noticeable, one of the first places the eyes go.

I checked the option on my f82 to add LED lights from the standard xenon. I added laser lights to my g80 xdrive as well. Part of it to me is to have the latest technology and help the car age well over time as I tend to keep my cars through a generation and at least one model year into the next until they work out the bugs.

One annoying thing with BMW is it took awhile for LED’s to even be standard as they have been on Honda’s or Toyota’s for years. They would still charge for backup cameras if they hadn’t been federally mandated in 2018.

No kidding since the LCI e90 in 2011 had LED tails! Maybe they had a huge inventory of bulbs to get rid of.

The E46 M3 LCI also had them 20 years ago. BMW is baffling sometimes.

I wonder what the replacement cost is for the standard light vs the upgraded light…

I’m pretty frugal and usually go with stripper specs because they hold best residual value but after debating laser lights for a day and looking at pics, I just had to option them. They look so good, minus the stickers.

I think that's a great choice if you're doing stripper and just one option. They just look so much better than the standard lights.

This is what my F82 has, along with High Beam Assistant, but I think possibly this was an option on early cars.

With post-LCI F8x LED/'Icon' lights, like many other LED systems, they do NOT physically move and instead are able to adjust the beam pattern by either switching off sections or using shutters (I'm not 100% sure if BMW used shutters).

The newer LEDs in G2x/G8x will use adaptive LED where it will blank/switch-off part of the beams. Generally speaking the latest LED systems will have a much higher LED density, especially on their 'option' lights, which some manufacturers refer to as 'pixel lighting' (a bit like the backlight array on higher end LCD/LED TVs, OLED is different as its 'self-lit').

In the 'Laserlight', again like competitors systems, they use a mix of 'regular' LED and a reflected LASER source (still actually generated by high output LED, I put LASER in caps as it is actually an acronym too!). Although as far I'm aware all of the LED sources are reflected anyway - in other words you're never seeing the direct output of any of the LEDs.

The beam is selectively adjusted/dimmed as needed to provide that 'adaptive' capability, which is why *apparently* you don't need to switch between low/high beam, as they automatically adjust for oncoming traffic to avoid dazzling (with the 'High Beam Assistant'). I think the High Beam part is the main [...]
2023 cx here and they definitely move.

I think what is being clarified is that the headlight assembly does not physically move / ossolate, and rather the beam pattern is electronically adjusted to cause the emitted light to shift in one direction or another.

I don’t think anyone is suggesting the light pattern doesn’t “move”

I haven’t stood in front of my car and watched, but regardless of how or why the lights are constantly shifting left to right to center.

I don’t see how you could digitally mimic movement like this, because the beams are physically moving way out of their forward direction and shifting off to the left and right as the steering wheel turns.

I’m not talking about the other pattern where one high beam is reduced into oncoming traffic while the other stays lit.

Haven’t stood in front of the lights to see how they effect this, but the light itself is moving (housing or otherwise), so either way… the light moves.
