Yeah - so the different types of reg are:

Dateless: Something like MBR123 (or F1)

Then old number plates: Something like ABC123Y (in this example the last letter indicates the year the car was registered)

Newer number plates: Something like M123ABC (in this example the first letter indicates the year the car was registered)

Latest number plates: Something like AB72ABC (in this example the number indicates the year the car was registered including which half of the year, so 22 means registered between March 2022 and September 2022 and 72 means registered between September 2022 and March 2023). The first two letters usually give an indication of where the car was registered too. So LC is common for Croydon (for example).

For cars registered in the second half of the year the first number goes up by one every 10 years. So a car with a 62 plate was registered in 2012 (unless its a private number plate, where you are not allowed to make a car appear younger than it is, but you can make a new car look older if you see what I mean).

Also one of my favorites I saw wasn't on a BMW, it was on a Benz, but the license plate was a veteran plate and said "FLIPL".

For those unfamiliar with what a FLIPL is...

From somewhere on FB:

Peter Starostecki and his kids Sadie, center, and Jo Jo, pose behind their car with the vanity license plate that the state of Maine has deemed in appropriate, Wednesday, March 8, 2023, in Poland, Maine."My license plate literally says 'love tofu.' I'm a vegan," Peter Starostecki told WGME, adding that he had no ill intentions.

I never understood getting a personalized plate and using as another badge for the car ... the car says m3/m4 about everywhere you look and no one cares about the chasis code

I agree. I've always found those and similar plates kind of uninspiring. But, to each of his own what they put on their cars.

I am totally for personalized license plates.

My take though, is it should be personal.

I understand clever BMW license plates , but I could never pick on because it wasn’t actually personal.

The best one on here is the LUVTOFU one, because that is all about him.

So - my take. Make it personal. It should be about you. It’s your car, your license plate, make it about you! And have fun!

My wife’s plate would say I ❤️PBJ. Because, well, PBJ is her favorite food!

Mine is model designation but also personal, MEIN M3. Reason being is it was a 20 year dream to own an M3 and I finally made it happen so I’m very happy to finally say My M3.

There is only so much you can do with 6-7 letters and that arent taken up by others. So yeah, will be nice to get cool plates without the designation but if its not available, still better than standard boring plates. To each its own.

That's why you (theoretically) have to challenge yourself to get creative without being either boring or something dumb like 2FAST4U. Granted non-BMW people don't have a clue what G80 means.
