I’m also joining the CarPlay gps drift club. M3 manual with 400 miles , just delivered 3 weeks ago. ID 8. Love the car otherwise, but yes, this issue is frustrating . No issues in my other vehicle’s car play.

I picked up my M3 base w/ ID8 ~1.5 weeks ago and had this issue on the drive home from the dealer. I tried the basic troubleshooting steps which provided a temporary fix however I did a hard reset on the head unit a couple of days ago and haven't experienced an issue since. I'll update if it comes back.

Also did the reset but the issue came back.
We need to wait for a proper fix from BMW.

Unfortunately the issue returned. According to Waze (and Apple/Google Maps) I have an amphibious vehicle.

It drives me crazy. The weird thing is it NEVER happens on my drive to work. Only on my drive home.

So I think I have a pretty good consistent fix. Go to your wifi settings and click the info icon on the bmw wifi. Turn auto join OFF. Now whenever you get in the car you will have to manually connect to the bmw wifi, but it has worked for me every single time over the last 10 days. Not a perfect solution, but if it works it works. To confirm my findings, I switched back to auto join for a day and immediately had the same issue.

Hope this helps.

Just tried once and this didn't work for me, I started to see the GPS drift issue after 5min.
When do you manually connect to the BMW Wifi, after you start the car or before ? not sure if it's a timing issue.

I connect after I start the car. I was really hoping this would be a good fix.

I finally gave up on using the native carplay. I'm using an ai box made for BMW called BW550P from iheylinkit. I happen to find it on aliexpress. It doesn't seem to be on Amazon. For now, until wireless carplay is fixed this is the only thing that works for me.

ID8 Updates and CarPlay

For my phone it’s an iPhone 13 and I’m on iOS version 16.3.1.

🤞🏻this eradicates this problem for good. Will update if I find myself in the middle of. A field once again when I’m supposed to be on the highway.
FWIW, when I complained to BMW that they didn't support AT&T for eSIM, they replied that "As of December 5, 2022 , AT&T customers with BMW software level 22-11-544 are able to use their mobile plan with Personal eSIM. Please note, software updates will be rolled out to customers based on their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). At this time, I do not have information regarding when an update will be available for a specific BMW vehicle." I'm currently on 11/2022.27, and last checked for an update a couple of days ago and none were available. I'm *hoping* that 11/22.60 will fix both AT&T eSIM AND, more importantly, CarPlay, so will keep checking

I’ve got 11/2022.61 and it definitely has AT&T esim, but the gps bug is not fixed, at least not for me.

Wish I could tell you the update succeeded but it’s a hard no. Still intermittently loses its location such that the only true reliable Nav is the BMW one. Frustrating but at least that one has never lost its location. Maybe the next update. 🤞🏻

Cool Temporary fix for Waze

Hi all,

On iOS, in the Waze settings, set Location to Always. Works perfectly for me.

Mine has been set this way forever and I've had the drift problems on and off since I got the car in October so definitely not the fix.

Worked for 2 days for me, then back to off-roading and cutting through the Bay.

Took delivery of a new M2 with iDrive 8 Monday and noticed this issue. Strangely it’s fine around my house but doesn’t work around my office, about 12 miles to the south.

Annoying, but it’s helpful to see everything you’ve already tried.

It is off the exact same way on Waze, Apple Maps, Google Maps and on the MyBMW app.

Is this a CarPlay only issue or are people seeing this with AndroidAuto as well?

Android auto is perfectly fine. I have been using it instead of CarPlay (I have 2 phones) and it’s been working great every time for 2 months. Carplay has the gps issue almost daily for me.

Worked for 20 minutes for me. Then it was back to being 50 meters off to the right or left. Sometimes in the woods, sometimes in the river. 🙄
