I’m a lazy mofo… but eventually I’ll get a good pic thread. The color is nice, goes great with the ivory. Couldn’t get a ppf / tint appt until mid April so it’ll be awhile before some good pics. Barely taken it out and I had a guy stop as I did some street parking and he just dropped his jaw ha ha. He was like, “man I just have to tell you… this is my dream car right here.”

He was really nice and I thanked him for the kind words. It’s fun that other people enjoy the car too. I’m glad to see that. I think this color combo was the right one for me. I’m not a tough guy personality and the front is a bit aggressive. I wanted to look more relaxed/friendly than aggressive.

I think BMW doesn’t know how to take good launch pictures or videos.

When I first saw the G80/82 online I was not overly impressed…then I saw a BSM M4 at the dealer and proceeded to trade in my M2 on a G82 and then traded the G82 on a Skyscraper Grey M3 the following year. 🙂

I was in the same boat as the OP. Take a look at my instagram for my first, in-person reaction. Big mouth and bucked tooth! I believed it to have all the characteristics of my perfect car, except for the front. So disappointed.

As time passed, the initial renderings of the G81 were beginning to surface. Living in the US, it was forbidden fruit, but I understood the design language more accutely with the longer roof of the wagon compared to the large negative space at the front.

Fast forward to November of last year, I had a Porsche training in SoCal, so decided to TURO a 2022 G80X w/buckets for a week. Having lived in Santa Monica for many years back in the early 2000's, I couldn't wait to shake it out on Piuma, Stunt, Tuna, etc.

Sure, Porsche has it beat on steering feel, braking feel, and transmission. At the same time, dollar for value, I feel its the most fun/usable 4-door AWD car for a guy like me that appreciates chassis balance and refinement. Spending time with it just bred more appreciation for the engineering and consequently, the looks.

As an interlude, I was ripping around Piuma where it meets up with Stunt and happened to pull over to appreciate the scenery. A XM test mule pulled behind me and we began to chat. One of the engineers was also the powertrain engineer on the G8X. We talked and explored the XM for nearly an hour, going back and forth on BMW, Porsche, F1, etc. I'd have to admit that the entire experience was what ultimately sealed the deal for me. Maybe they (BMW) planned it all along.

I am expecting my ordered G80x to arrive in about 6 weeks or so.

Now, it's the BEST LOOKING M3 IMHO period!

I bought one and am hopefully picking up next week, however I still think the front isn’t the prettiest. The rest of the car is gorgeous but the front catches me by surprise whenever I see one passing by.

Looks wise for me:
E46>F80>E30>G80>E90>E36

I will say the G8x makes everything else look dated in comparison though.

I still want to like it but can't. Interior is dope with the carbon seats and I love the iomg color. Ive come around on the rear 3/4 view. But the front still makes me nauseated.

Had hopes for the g87 but that also missed the mark for me

An interesting observation... There is definitely a love/hate reaction to the current M3/M4 grill, among the BMW enthusiasts in this forum. Some love it. Some hate it. And some use their hate of the grill as a rationalization for buying an F8X earlier as an imaginary good decision (while they subconsciously kick themselves for not waiting, and buying a G8X which is superior in almost every way).
That being said, I find many non-BMW enthusiasts and non-BMW owners who are overall car lovers to be VERY complimentary about the G8X. I bet almost half of these people ONLY cited the front grill as awesome looking, beautiful, etc. I've had the car backed into the garage and had people walking (or in one case, driving) by, say, "I absolutely LOVE the front of your car!"

Bmw lost her design lead to genesis.. now look at what he is building. Bmw could end up losing a lot of customers to Genesis if they keep this up.

It’s a concept.
It won’t look like that.

Beyond that, not hugely different from the front end of a bmw today lol. All depends on whether you like a solid block of black or not. I don’t find one better than the other.

Although, the lights are cool.
