M3 CS vs. M5 Comp.

I am interested in some feedback to help me consider all my options. I am new to the forum but owned a few BMWs.

I have ordered a 2024 M3 CS. My dealer has a loaded 2023 M5C that I could potentially get for 15-20k off MSRP.

My instincts tell me to stick with the CS, but the wife likes the M5. The discounted M5 is cheaper than the CS.

There will only be one, maybe two, CS in my state.

Thoughts?

M5 =

1. Last generation looks
2. More muscular performance
3. Not as sharp in the handling
4. More storage
5. Arguably will hold value worse

G80 CS

1. Latest design language
2. Very powerful but perhaps not ultimately as flexible in torque delivery
3. Sharper track focussed handling
4. Arguably will hold value better

As an owner of both...the m5 has the motor and feature suite however it's last gen tech vs a 23 M3.

The interior space is a wash, the m3 let alone CS version is the better driver on the back roads. ID8 it's better tech.

Personally I would go for the CS then get the next gen M5 or would wait for the new M5 launch if time allows.

The reason the M5 is cheap as its at the end of the cycle and soon die with the current 5 generation and they want them off the books.

Can't say I have a favorite... They are different...is a Miata better to drive then a Mustang GT...

Both the M3/M5 are stupid fast and handle but they do it differently.

M3 is a bit of a dancer as the M5 is more of a wrestler.

If you where just highway cruising the M5... Nothing beats a V8s bottom end, you have heated/cooled and massaging seats, B&W audio and a V8 that will step out... But once you get to more technical stuff the M3 will dance with a better front end and better commuciafion/ flow.

Partly because it's lighter and the newer developed platform but the 3 has always been more dynamic vs a 5.

Watch the video below..granted this is M5CS but ... Similar mindset
https://youtu.be/LV3Md4WSlk0

It comes down to personal taste ... Are you going to go canyon driving /apex hunting or more fast sweepers with long straights...

Both can do it and do at the top of there class well...just comes down to how they choice to do it and what you prefer.

I go m3 to m5 then back to M3 and will be happily waiting until the next gen M5 comes out.

I owned a 2022 M5 competition that was lightly modded (secondary downpipes, exhaust, eventuri intakes and a piggyback tune. I now own a 2023 M3 Jahre edition.

Personally, the M3 with the carbon buckets is way more engaging to drive. It feels more special to me as well. I got more compliments the first day my fire orange Jahre was delivered vs the entire 8 months I had my donnington grey m5 comp.

Having owned both, I will say with confidence you will be much happier with the M3.

Unless you’re tracking then m5. I made the mistake and picked the m3 because it was my first bmw and I didn’t want to go crazy on my first bmw buy. Car is good I’m just not in love with it. Rather have something with a v8.

I wonder if I can snag a final MY f90 before the g90 is released before my lease is up next year.

15-20k off msrp on a brand new M5? I would snatch that up.

I have owned both the G80 and now have the F90 over the past year and like the comment above me if you are not going to track the car consistently the M5 is the winner in everything else by a long shot.

If you are more interested in having something different and more rare then yes the M3 CS. Cant go wrong here but figure out whats more important to you and go from there.

I agree with everyone’s valid points but I will chime in as I owned a ‘19 M5 comp stage2 Downpipes and now own a ‘23 50 Jahre Edition G80.

The M5 was amazing and nothing beats that 8 cyclinder. The power was certainly there but it’s certainly different than the G80. The G80 just feels sportier with the form factor, bucket seats, more meant for the canyon and mountain runs, track etc. The M5 bowers and Wilkins sound system was gorgeous and obviously it’s more spacious and more comfortable.

15-20k is a crazy discount but like others said it’s going away / redesign so not sure how much value it’ll hold. Not sure if that matters. The M3 CS is much rarer as you already mentioned.

I’d say, for daily M5 is amazing. For weekends and fun G80 all day. I’ve only owned my G80 for about two months now but that’s how I feel so far.

M3 CS without question. Possibly could be faster, will hold its value better, and the M5C will be eclipsed by the next M5 instantly. M3 CS meanwhile, probably one of the last ICE M3s and could be one of the best M3's ever.

My .02 - as for value, I'd weight more resale vs how much you pay initially. That's what usually gets Corvette or other "value conscious" buyers over say GT3. "I get more bang for the buck with this" and only GT3 appreciates in/keeps value in the end.

Get the M5, period. The bucket seats in the M3 CS are no match for the comfort and daily driveability of the M5.

Literally nobody in this discussion can offer you feedback on G80 M3cs ownership. So there is that to consider.

I’d take any g80 over the f90, just based on the looks alone. That .2 faster launch time wouldn’t be enough for me to want a f90.

G80 is already plenty large and luxurious too. Do you really want a car as big as the f90?

You’re also going to have yesterdays m5 in a short time, if that matters to you.

New M5 (V8 Hybrid) is just around the corner, why would you want to buy an "old" car? The M3 CS is a special model, so even if the M3 LCI comes in 2024, it will still be a special car.
