Washed my wheels

Big deal, right? Everyone washes their wheels after/before they wash their car.

A bit more than 5K on the car now, and after a dirty day at the track (another fabulous day at the track!) I decided to take the wheels off, get the barrels and every bit of it clean, and then put on a ceramic coating not only to make them shine, but hopefully stay slightly shinier and maybe just maybe a smidgen easier to clean.

Enjoy.

Oh - I should note that I got more compliments this weekend on the M4 than ever before on any car I've had, which includes many 911s, Corvettes and former M cars. Partly the color, partly the snout.

And yes, while I had the wheels off, I went ahead and cleaned the calipers too.

What ceramic coating did you use? Did you use a high heat one?

I actually do this to my wheels in spring and in fall, about the same times i do my oil change.

If you use wheel guard, or some sort of paste wax (i find paste wax to be better than liquid wax), brake dust doesn't really adhere to the wheels as much making daily cleaning routine a lot easier when you do clean the wheels during each wash.

I'm about to do the same this coming weekend. I bought ceramic coating specifically for wheels and calipers. It was recommended by my detail shop. Link below.

Do you have an IR lamp for curing?

I think Gyeon makes a wheel ceramic coating (true ceramic) that does not require heat curing. I used it on my current wheels and it helps, though honestly not as much as I hoped. It could be user error though as I only did one coat, and likely did not use enough product. Haha

I do not, but I plan to buy a bulb from Amazon. It should fit any lamp with a normal socket. Best to use an articulating lamp so you can adjust it.

The coating lasts up to a year, my detail guy said he has seen it last longer, just depends how much driving you do. The lamp will be an investment since I'll be applying the coating once a year.

I used Optimum. It is not a high heat coating, but I don't need that for the wheels, they don't get terribly hot. I didn't/wouldn't bother doing it on the calipers, as they get really hot.

I think the secret (or a secret) to "ceramic coating" is to not use too much product. A little goes a long way.

Hated cleaning the 788M on the M2, and I can already see how the 826Ms are going to be a major PITA to keep clean.

I just spray on Gtechniq W6 Iron and General Fallout Remover, let it sit about 3 minutes, and then blast it with a pressure washer. Works great, although I think the environment dies a little each time. That stuff smells like what I imagine Jaba the Hutt's rotting carcass would smell like.

Be CAREFUL with the IR light, I've read horror stories of people using IR Lamps to cure resin 3D-Prints without an enclosure or eye protection and permanently damaged their eyes. It's like sunburn x1000

Thanks for the heads up. I've read using IR lamps for muscle pain treatments for short intervals. Curious how did they damaged their eyes, were they looking straight into it?

I spoke to my detail guy just now, he said IR lamp is not required, it's an extra step to speed up the curing process. It's equivalent to not driving your car for couple of days, which is not a big deal.

Is that a cleaning solution that turns purple?
If so, I use either Sonax or Meguiar's and yes, it smells terrible.
Smells like hair dye...

You know what, I goofed. I misread and thought you meant UV lamps (purple), not IR (heat). UV will screw up your eyes from direct and indirect exposure (reflections). UV light is used to cure resins all the time.

Does anyone have a preferred brake pad set for low dust?

Yes it turns purple as the solution dissolves the brake dust.

Yeah, those cleaners help a LOT when cleaning wheels with crazy spokes design.
However, once a week wash times 4 wheels to spray, and it gets quite expensive.

We've had no more than 2 or 3 days without rain in the last month and a half in the Portland area. At this rate, it'll be Spring before there's any point in washing any part of the car. Sigh.

The wheels look great.
