Key not found or malfunction errors

Recently I have been getting intermittent key not found or key malfunction errors when I get into the car but I was still able to start it up... anyone experience this and know why? I checked with BMW, they said there was no error code and saw nothing wrong. I do have the CF cover on the key but don't think that would cause the interference

I've had that on multiple occasions with my G01 X3. However, I noticed it would almost always be if I started up the car and then either a passenger would get in after I pulled out of the garage or if I got out with the car running and either put one of my kiddos in the backseat or got something from the house and then got back in and closed the driver's door. Strangest thing and it hasn't happened in some time now but I could never pin down an exact cause. The more frustrating part about it is that it also would knock my phone off from being connected to CarPlay and then I couldn't always get it to reconnect via iDrive.

If the key leaves the car’s interior, it will prompt that error message.

Another common cause is the key battery is low on power/reserve. I had that all the time with my G05 X5. The dealer service team was kind enough to replace the battery every time, and they remarked it’s very common on BMW’s latest models. At its most ridiculous, I was replacing the battery every couple weeks. Lessons learned:

1. Store your car keys at least 10-15 feet away from the vehicle, so they go to sleep after a time, vs. periodically communicating with each other. And never keep the key inside the vehicle, whereupon they communicate with each other constantly.

2. Skip the cheap replacement batteries the dealer offers, and get a reputable name brand battery instead. DuraCells have been lasting 10x longer for me vs. the cheap dealership batteries under the same conditions.
