I was happy enough with the P-Zero's in the rain in March, and happy enough with them through the summer. But. Coming up on 5k miles on them, with the rain coming at us with a vengeance, they aren't what they were when they were new. I'm not near the wear markers, and I've tried various tire pressures to see if I could change their behavior (which worked...33 in front is a good cold pressure for them on ugly days, to the extent that they can be made to behave).

The PZ's are STILL very good at reasonable speeds in the wet, but they've seriously degraded at lower speeds and from a start. Not just with spin but they just feel weird and less than stable until about 30 mph. More so than the PSS's and PS4S's I ran on my F87C. It's difficult to be sure since I haven't run PS4S's on this particular car, but I've been driving in inclement weather for 34 and a half years now, and I trust my "this isn't good enough" instinct.

I don't know how they are in the rain, because I drive like a grandma in the rain. For me, they performed just fine in the rain at or around the speed limit.

In the dry, they were pretty damn good...as I just spent 3 days driving very spiritedly on some treacherous but thrilling mountain roads in Tennessee and the surrounding area (I was at the Tail of the Dragon). They performed admirably. Still can't wait to wear these out and get the Michelins, but I was actually quite impressed with the P Zeros. They held up well.

But at one point, after a long stretch of hairpin turns and spirited driving, they heated up to the point where they were starting to get squirrely. So I had to back off them for a bit, and let the tires cool down. But that would happen with the Michelins too. Hours of spirited driving will take their toll on any tires.

The tire pressure status screen shows the tire temperature as well. Too hot would be over 200F since optimal grip is between 150-180F. Squirrelly" is how I would describe them when they're cold and still warming up (soft sidewall) and "greasy" when they're overheated. I wouldn't expect to see temperatures in the overheating range on mountain roads, especially when it's cooler out.

PZ4 Wet handling and braking are far superior than the Michelin PS4 I'm sure the dry is just as good but I do know the pz4 wear is not as good as the Michelin

Manufacturers put in a lot of effort in developing OEM tires (especially for a platform like G8x) and not sure what the big deal about Michelins. They might be a tad better than Pirellis but almost all of us would not see the difference unless one tracks the vehicle regularly.

For What it's worth I drive pretty hard and the pirellis that are specific for the M cars are good up until 6-7 k then they are shot. I was pissed when I got them on my car instead of ps4s which came on my m340i from factory but I'm not disappointed.

How prescient ... I have 7,000+ miles on my P's, and tire noise has devolved from noticeable to objectionable. On smooth, months-old tarmac the noise rivals a Rubicon running all-terrains. Morning temperatures below 45°F do them no favors, but they're nearly as noisy in the afternoons (>55°F). One more day before the PA5's are mounted, then come next spring I'll upgrade to * Spec PS4S's.

Both these were designed to work on the G8x. Reviews say very similar with the Pirelli having the edge in rain. No complaints here though might give PS4s a try next time.

Pzeros are very good *new*. Pzeros wear faster than Michelins. PS4S are probably comparable or slight better (may not even notice for average driver). Just that they last longer they are worth upgrading once Pzeros are shot.

BMW "star" OEM tires have very different construction and multiple tread compounds compared to a generic similar sized and advertised non "Star" tire. If the Pirelli and Michelin / continentals were not very comparative and competitive BMW wouldn't cert them with the "star". Tread compounds do make a difference when driven hard. grocery store runs and chilling out won't ever notice a difference.

But if yo have to replace a tire on a lease car make sure you use an acceptable tire for your dealer to accept. Many dealers, if they dont see the :star: on the sidewall, they would accept it, or just make life difficult.

PS4S Star verses non star.... They are different

OEM Pirellis were swapped out for winter set (Michelin Pilot Alpin 5), and I can again hear things besides tire noise. Technician who did the tire swap concurred Pirellis were toast (after ~7,500 miles). That qualifies as the fastest-wearing set of OEM tires I've driven exclusively on the street. (Track tires don't count.)

Here's a pretty good data point for PZERO* vs PS4S* :

In the video description StudioRSR has laptimes for both tires on a 100% stock car.

Looking at my wear with not too aggressive street driving I am expecting around 7500 miles as well. I always switch at 3mm though and initial tread depth isn't overly generous!

I don't get the obsession with tire wear on an ultra high performance summer tire. Physics are physics, if you want a long running tire get some CrossClimates or something. If your summer tire wears out fast its because it has a soft compound which translates to higher performance and more grip. I would take the PZERO over the PS4S any day because its just as good on the track but its more comfortable otherwise in everyday driving. Superb tires and anyone who "loses" the tire lottery should be very happy with them.

My Pirellis with 10,051 miles on them. Probably at 4/32nds. Due soon. Car is xDrive.

Edit: Both pictures are the passenger side (right side, drivers, for those of you in the UK) rear tire. The fronts probably have 6/32nds on them. I'm also surprised to see the CSL Cup2R tires, are so cheap. I thought for sure, they would be about $600-$700 a tire.

Ive had both brands of tires. Im not a professional driver nor do i track my car. Tires are no different other than the sidewall on the ps4s's are much more esthetically pleasing in my opinion. Currently on PZeros. Just my two cents. They both work fine for me

Purely my opinion. I've had both on the G80 platform. This is such an overblown thing. The Pirellis performed amazingly.. and actually, were quieter. If you're driving at the limits of the P-Zero on the street - you're being reckless. And if on the track, there are much better tires. R888, Sport Cup 2's etc. I'm not saying I don't prefer the Michelins, rather, having Pirellis isn't "losing".

I just took my wheels off, yesterday to clean the barrels. The tire with the most tread, is the front. The other 3 are of the 2 rears.

Pirelli with 10,300 miles. xDrive. Fairly aggressive street driving. A few canyon runs. Probably a dozen or more launch control launches.
