Should I sell my E39 M5 for one?
I'm on the fence guys!
I haven't owned the E39 M5 for long, and I've owned an F80 previously which I thought was just OK. I sat in an M4 in the dealer and was plesantly surprised to find the seat was more comfortable than my previously M3 and possibly more so than the M5. It seemed to have more padding and less bolstering digging into my legs than both cars. I know what the power band is going to feel like, although I'd love to test drive one. I'm torn between depreciation vs. possible appreciation and repairs. |

I've had a manual E39 M5. Sold it stupidly cheap after the last 08/09 recession when car prices collapsed for like €11k and it only had 60k miles. Dreadful decision in hindsight but it helped fund the next car and I actually made a profit on it would you believe.
I would keep the M5. It's not losing money over the next 3 years where as the M3 will lose $30k+ Is the M5 going to have major repairs? Maybe but depends on current condition etc. Is your M5 a nice example or a bit worn out? Ideally I would park the M5 and Keep it knowing it's not losing much value and consider leasing /buying the M3 if your looking to scratch an itch. You can always sell one of them later if it's not doing it for you and surplus's to requirements but you probably won't know until you have them side by side for a while. I remember the M5 being far more comfortable than the G80 for what it's worth, particularly the back seats which are terrible in the G80 in terms of comfort If you like new tech the G80 is very cool compared to the old analog stuff but there is something nice about the old simplicity of the analog stuff too! |

If you’re going to sell a car like an E39 M5, this is probably a historically great time to do it. Pretty much the polar opposite market conditions compared to your first go-round.
Conversely, new cars have MSRPs set for “normal” conditions and are thus good buys. If you’re financing, BMW’s current rates are quite favorable. However, you’ll still be in line for meaningful depreciation when things go back to normal. If you do make the switch, no need to rush things - lower your cost of driving the new car by seeking out deals under MSRP. |

Of course with a E39 you will have repair bills, probably some rust / bodywork to attend to since the very last cars off the production line are nearing 20 years old.
But with that said, it's an E39 M5 (some might say a dinosaur) which is an awesome machine, pretty rare, amazing naturally aspirated engine and stunning in my eyes. As has been said above, the values of the E39 M5 are only go one way at the moment so if you want to sell, now would be a good time.

+1.
I’ve had two E39 M5s (stock 2000 and modified 2002), and I miss them both. The 2000 was Alpine White over Caramel and a perennial club concours winner. The 2002 was absolutely dialed in and had the sexiest exhaust note. “They don’t make ‘em liked they used to,” and values reflect demand outstripping diminishing supply. |

Bumping this thread because it looks like I'm selling the E39 for gooood money. I might regret it, but the G80 might scratch the itch...
That is if and when they are available locally. No way I'm paying MSRP or a premium for one. |

I think people have found G80/82s for MSRP in states where there is less demand. In SoCal at least one can forget it.

Please don't do this. Or at least say you're taking the money and putting the asset appreciation to good use vs selling the E39 for a G80.
The E39 is generally regarded as one of the best cars BMW has ever produced. The G80 is, at best, highly controversial. |

To me. NO.
the E39 will grow up in value in the future. My brother had one, and he's still missing it, even if he has a brand new M8comp. coupé into the garage. Ypu should buy a new one, but keeping the M5 too.

Interesting one, but I'll add this to the mix: I hate thinking of cars as an investment. With it being so clean and low mileage, I have 0 doubt it'll fetch really good money, especially if it's a good color combo.
With the exception of my M2C, all my cars were higher mileage when I bought them used and I love the fact that I can put miles on them with no guilt. No plans to sell them, but still good to know they're not museum pieces.

Time Value of Money. Used car prices are sky high, and may not be like this again for 10 to 20 years.
So unless you absolutely love the car, and it's a must have from your standpoint, I'd sell it right now while I could get a Pretty Penny. Forget whether you buy a G8X or not, it's all about buying low and selling high. But if you love it, then keep it and drive the hell out of it. I wouldn't sit on it much longer hoping that you can cash in for more 5 or 10 years from now. Maybe you could, but again, the time value of money...I'd cash in now. |

Gotta keep the E39.
It's a Teutonic icon. They just don't make them wonderfully analog like that anymore. Plus, it's Maher/Roy-approved
