No, it means when my wife swaps out her X4 we'll be looking for a new 'family' car. I'm not a huge fan of the ZF8 in it but she likes it. If the ZF8 in the G81 is as good as they say it is I'll go for it - otherwise it will be a PDK Macan or Grecale.

BMWBlog recently shared spy photos of the upcoming G20 (3-series) LCI, which included the big curved dash/iDrive 8:

https://www.bmwblog.com/2021/10/21/2...urved-display/

I find this a little disappointing, and was hoping they'd reconfigure the form factor to be more traditional cockpit (less Tesla), at least with the G8X.

I'm actually holding out for LCI as I want ID8. I like the new layout as I hate the ID7 live cockpit professional. All the people that have reviewed the i4 M50 and iX have nothing but good things to say about the new screens and they look much brighter and more vibrant than the current dull and dark displays.

Same here, I think it's a nice clean look and I like the idea of a big 14" infotainment screen.

The warranty on my Alfa Giulia QV runs out in October and I'm hoping the LCI G80s are available by then. Hopefully we'll get some additional data points soon.

Yeah I'm currently #1 with my dealer in line for the 2023MY. I'm hoping it'll be worth the wait...

I don’t think the G80 will get ID8 until the LCI for the G22 4 Series gets it, they’ll update the G8X all at the same time. But, I guess we’ll find out.

Nothing official, obviously, but according to this (very well-informed) poster, it will:

It would be interesting to see how BMW is going to split changes between G80 and G82 LCI.

The F80 got two LCIs, so I guess time will tell.

Totally agreed. I don't like the protrusion. I like the Mercedes concept dash where it is inbuilt and surrounded by the dash

Take the M2 as example, MY2016 came with very outdated ID4 which immediately was replaced by MY2017 which also brings other good updates (significantly better audio system).

Then the MY2018 is the LCI which refreshes the interior and has the LED headlight upgrade which is a significant aesthetic improvement.

However, the biggest hit was with the MY2019 with the S55 engine change and other huge upgrades under the competition package.

I believe some still remember how hard it was for anyone to get an M2 allocation in 2016 when it's first landed to the US. My point is:

1) in early 2016 if you just wait a couple month for the My2017(SOP from July 2016), you'd get a significantly more modern car with ID5 (upgrade-able to even later ID6 lite).

2) if you know what's coming as the MY2018 LCI (from July 2017), you're able to make informed decision as to wait or not in early 2017.

3) If you know MY2019 gets the S55 I believe the most would choose to wait. Heck I'd even pass the M2 altogether and get the 991.2s should I know the S55 thing from the beginning.

The F87 M2 is an example how important it is to know(not necessarily to wait) what's to come, which influences the decision in a big way.

I have a strong feeling the same or even more will go to the G80/82.

For example:
1) in my opinion the S58 has a big responsiveness issue which potentially would get fixed (to some extent) by getting a ISG system.

2) I also believe the ID8 will instantly make all older system very obsolete. It's something once you see you can't unsee.

3) Cosmetic has always been a big issue and maybe bmw is going to do something about it. Let's look at G30/F90 LCI, which brings a significantly cooler laser headlight, and a revised bumper. Ask yourself, do you want that with the M3/4.

4) Again, look at F80 where you realize that the LCI model just has a bit of everything better and make for a noticeably all around car compared to earlier years. For the G80 you're not going to wait half the life cycle. Just one year with the LCI.
Agree on lot of points you made... but I think the M2 is the worst example of a typical life cycle of a BMW model ...

The switch to S55 probably would have never happened if the new regulations didn't kicked the other engine out...so probably not even BMW knew this when working on the OG M2...

On the other side, I think ID8 won't happen that soon on G8X, at least not with the single display layout, it is never mentioned in any talks about what models will receive it...
IMO I believe the new dash won't find its way into the M cars so soon or at all...as those are still more driver focused cars, where ID8 clearly is not focusing on, here I see a similarity to Mercedes, the C63 as an example never received the new curved dash despite facelifts after the dash had been introduced to other models...instead it gets the complete new layout now introduced with the S class.
I really hope your predictions are right about them retaining the current dash (each to their own, of course, with respect to the design): it would be astonishing for them to convert so soon to such a radical overhaul of the screen, especially given that we (at least here in the UK) are only just receiving the xdrive. It feels like the G80 has barely emerged from the remnants of its hatching shell..!

Regarding the Idrive 8 with totally changed dashboard for the LCI : i believe it when i see it. The reason that i am doubting it is the new 4 series Gran Coupe that has just been introduced. Whereas the i4 gets the new stile iDrive 8 dash the 4 series Gran Coupe did not get it. If they really would plan to put the new dash in the G20 facelift next year, why not already put it in the 4 series GC now (when they do put it in the i4 that shares the same body) ??

I know there are some pics of a prototype G20 with the new dash, but who is saying this is not a prototype for the i3 (the coming electric version of the 3 series) ?

So i would be surprised if they would put a new dash in the G20 next year. Whenever have they put a completely new dash in a LCI compared to the pre-LCI ? I think never.

That's certainly possible, since there were only two photos of that 3-series with the new dash. But this series of LCI test mule photos are certainly for the G20 (note the tailpipes and hybrid stickers), and do NOT include the curved dash. Perhaps/hopefully, iDrive 8 will be retrofitted into the existing dash form factor. But we'll see...

You are right about the test vehicles not all being electric vehicles. Also the car in the pictures earlier in this thread has a german licenceplate without a E in the end, which also suggests that it is not a electric vehicle.

It would however also be possible that they test the new dash also in non-electric vehicles just for testing purposes of the new systems, in order to get as much testing hours as possible. If they do not plan on changing the dashboard for the G20 LCI it is not needed to test the old dashboard version, so why not just also use these cars for testing of the new iDrive 8 dash ?

I do however still think that it does not make any sense to now release the 4 series GC with the old dash while the i4 has the new dash, and then a mere couple of months later put the new dash in the LCI G20, and not introducing it now on the 4 series GC

The 3, 4, and 4GC are all on different timelines for LCI. This thread here outlines when the LCI will occur for each:

Thanks for the link. I read it before and now read it again. Please note that these are only rumours based on internal leaks. These are not facts.

I still find it very unlogical the 4 series Gran Coupe that is being introduced now will not get the new dash (and it's brother i4 does get it), and the 3 series LCI would get it just a couple months after the G26 4 GC is being delivered. This is totally unlogical. Logical would have been that the 4 GC would have gotten the new iDrive 8 from the start same as the i4. If that had been the case i would believe that the G20 LCI would also get it next summer.

But there is no logic that you do give it to the G20 LCI next summer and do not give it to the G26 4 GC now. The only logical explanation would be that only a i3 electrical G20 version would get the new dash, in my opinion.

Info provided by key forum members is much more reliable than the typical magazine rumors. Yes its not official from BMW but gives a pretty good idea.

Its pretty clear from the beginning that 3 and 4 series LCI (lead for M3/4) have different timelines. From what i understand, 4 series always lag behind 3 series in feature introduction and 4 GC will follow 4 series timeline. Why would BMW implement iD8 during initial 4 GC production which is planned for 3 and 4 series LCI.

You end your post with the sentence 'Why would BMW implement iD8 during initial 4 GC production which is planned for 3 and 4 series LCI'.
Well my logic was simple : it is introduced the same time as the i4 and shares the bodywork with it. So why use iDrive 8 on one and not the other. Why let the other one wait 2 years for it ? That was my logic.

But anyway : we will know the answer in about 9 months from now. So we have to be a bit patient and then we will know it.
