G80 M3 Comp xDrive vs 2022 X3M Comp

Hello everyone!

I was on this form a few months ago as I had an allocation for a G80 M3 Comp xDrive that I ended up giving up because I moved and bought a condo. I currently live in New York City (previously living in Philly) and own a 2015 F32 435i xDrive currently sitting on the stock 19 inch double spoke orbit grey M rims. To say I've had bad luck with tires and rims in cities with potholes would be putting it mildly. I've had HORRIFYING luck. Multiple rims and tires, multiple thousands of dollars. They have caused me incredible grief over the years. I am back to looking at a possible new car and have been trying to decide if I should move out of the car world into the SUV world. This would mainly be a daily driver, for commuting to work, trips to the mountains, normal northeast driving.

What are people's general opinions versus these two? Have people had better luck with BMW SUV's in terms of tires and rims or are they just as bad. Are the new G80/2 better in terms of rims and tires this go around?

Any help/advice would be great. If you want more info just let me know. Thanks so much!!

I have both. No issues with the X3M in 18 months and same with the M3 but only a few months. Both my wife and I do drive carefully though.

Both have non run flats. I've had many BMWs in past and those damn run flats were horrible.

an M car with run flats should be illegal.

I have both a 2022 M4 Comp xDrive and a 2022 X4M Comp, the X4MC is an amazing vehicle, I'd have zero reservations as having it as my only vehicle.

How do you find the two compare in ride quality and handling? I have an M3 Cx on order, but with how backed up things are -- my dealer is saying March, but for all anyone knows, it could be sometime this summer, at which point the LCI is already out and I'm probably reordering -- it's very tempting to go buy an X3M off the lot. I'm not going to be driving this on a track, so if the day-to-day driving experience is as good/better in the X3M, that might be a good option.

Speed and handling the M3Cx is going to just out do the X3MC in all categories, the SUV has a weight penalty behind it. Can't do much about that.

Ride comfort? I mean, they're both comfortable depending on the settings you use and they both can be rather harsh too. The M3Cx is going to be less comfortable and practical than the X3MC, but you're splitting hairs.

They deliver unique experiences, which is why I own both. Except I have a X4MC and a M4Cx, I'd find owning a X3MC, and a M3Cx to be a little redundant both being four doors.

As I mentioned, I have both and the X3M is not nearly the same as the M3. Don't get me wrong, my wife's loves it and it meets our needs but you can feel the weight and the seating is much higher giving a less sporty and tossable feel.

Had an X3M comp for a year. Fantastic vehicle, but lacks the "soul" of an M3 (and the user base). If you need the extra utility, get the X3/4M, otherwise M3 all the way.

Would get into more detail but making my way through some a nice Hobbs Beckstoffer right now…

Do you (or anyone else that has driven both) find that the G8x rides better than the X3M? I haven't been able to drive a G8x today, but drove an X3M and was shocked at how incredibly harsh the ride was. If the G8x is similar, then maybe it's more hardcore than I want. Thanks!

The X3M's I drove were harsh and had an odd feeling as they hit bumps...like the harshness was reverberating through the entire vehicle. My M2C was harsher, but the harshness didn't ride through the entire car, but it did occasionally upset the handling to a minor extent and I did feel it clearly through the seat, a bit more so than the F80's I test drove.
Very different than my benchmark of harsh cars, my old RSX Type S. It was harsh, impacting the entire vehicle and the handling, and I'm pretty sure the car was trying to break my spine.

The G80 is less harsh than any of them, but it's still a sports vehicle and not a plushy 5 series. I can't think of a single instance when the harshness upset the handling in eleven months with her. I don't feel the hits through the set, and on bad roads comfort mode really does help. Honestly, if it's too hardcore for your needs, I think few sporty cars will be.
