Got it from BMWpartsworldwide.com

I have a 6mt manual g8x group on FB, check it out. https://www.facebook.com/groups/6962...ibextid=unz460
Awesome. I just sent a request to join it.

I had to buy the shifter with the boot when all I wanted was the boot. Before then, I was looking for that CF knob and couldn't find it alone - you gotta buy the entire thing.
You think it’s worth it to just buy the whole thing and not use the boot it comes with? Like is the improvement worth the money or it’s just mostly cosmetic

Honestly, no, and here’s why: an SSK will do significantly more to enhance the shifting experience than any knob on its own. The FutureClassic SSK made by Rogue Engineering increases the force required to shift, makes it even more notchy so you can bang into gears with confidence, and removes vertical play in the shifter.

The cost: $450. Cost of the boot leather + knob: $240-$280. Sure there are installation costs, but I would’ve never purchased a knob had I known how much better the SSK would feel vs the stock shifter. Those that have driven my car absolutely agree - the SSK feels great and makes it more of an experience shifting each time. Not to mention you can retain the stock shifter and actually get a longer one for better leverage during shifting for more accurate shifts while enjoying physically shorter throws.

Love your setup btw
I agree with you in regards to the shift knob and the OEM shifter - it felt great; throws felt shorter and definitely enhanced the driving experience. My issue was related to the BMW performance shift knob after the SSK was installed as it caused inaccurate shift and, grinding, and required a longer knob for better leveraging. mzcp can attest to the need/desire to have a longer shift knob with the SSK as he did the RE Delrin knob first and I followed shortly thereafter.

Custom Shift Knob

So I ordered a BMW Performance Shift Knob on eBay for my g82.

I've disassembled it. I will be Cerakote'ing the knob black to match my interior. I'll keep the textured grip part sliver.

The other part (palm rest) I am going to cover in carbon fiber.

Replacing the M Tricolor highlights with solid red.

I'll keep you updating on the progress.

Update: Added a rough render of the final look of the knob.

Shift Knob pt2

I've got some updated pics of the shift knob project. I still need to work on the boot. It not fitting well to the G82 base plate. I may need to have a new one made. Let me know what you guys think.

The C-102 Graphite Black Cerakote looks to be a great match to the black plastic in the car.

I was not sure if this was going to work, but I ordered the black CF M performance shift knob that comes with the alcantara boot, and hand trimmed it to fit the plastic clip-in bracket from the OEM shift boot. It was super easy to peel the OEM shift boot off of the bracket by hand… I could not remove the staples used to fasten the leather boot, so Krazy glued the alcantara boot to the bracket over them. The fit was awkward at first because of the different shapes, so I had to do quite a bit of trimming and corner folding, but it all came together beautifully. If I were to do it over again I would probably have fastened the bracket a little further distally since there is *just* enough slack from the boot to allow the shift gate to move smoothly. That said, it feels amazing.

So, I really want to make the previous gen MPerformance knob work on my G80 as others have done. Is there a difference between these two different items linked below?

Hmm, hard to tell what the differences are.
But on the F8x platform, the shift boot brackets are different between the F80/82 vs. the F87. They're not interchangeable unlike the G platform.

If you're using them to fabricate into the G8x console, I don't think it matters which one you use.
