Why not install a kill switch in your car? Shut your battery off when you park at night. My friend had it in his Honda car wouldn’t start unless you hit a hidden button in the car

This needs to be on the front page and pinned for a while. This is more valuable than another feature on a BMW with new wheels or a 20k mile review. This is important to anyone with a modern car. Especially if this method catches on. Park your car routinely in a public area for work? You could be a target.

Look into this device from Australia. I got it installed a couple of days ago. They can’t steal my car even with current active key inside. They stole my neighbors X3MC a month ago. I’ve posted on F97 forum about it.

Exactly. Would like to hear how this plays out and actually see if BMW can do something to stop this. Not argue about what a true M car is. I have an opinion on that but this is not the thread.

As someone who is about to buy one of these cars, I'd like to know how to best protect it.

This is crazy. I wonder if this is why my gfs got stolen twice. And I heard things about the people that work in open road bmw and how someone was making keys. A friend told me this and that’s where her car was from. I hate being in fear though. This scares the shit out of me

Thieves have accomplices working at bmw dealerships. It’s that simple.

I bet if they start putting the names of whoever processes these keys they’ll get to the bottom of it. You would figured something high end like a bmw dealer would’ve had this procedure done already.

Exactly. I remember hearing this happen at my dealer (not Open Road) and he got fired and they pressed charges. But these kids are making money getting the cars and no one values real jobs anymore.

Should be easy for the dealers to check. One or two guys doing a lot of replacement keys above the normal key replacement volume is the place to start.

Insider theft happens everywhere and some are harder to avoid.

Around 2010 had my identity stolen with 6 credit cards opened by a low life. Personal investigation pointed to a dental office where I had my cleaning done. Since then keep my credit frozen all the time except for a week or two if I need to use it and don’t provide anyone my social(legally they can’t ask).

Other scary one is cell phone company tech insiders doing SIM cloning and having customer’s entire savings and retirement funds drained because many financial companies use texting as a 2 step authentication.

It is quite concerning especially since many people probably don’t have additional riders on their insurance to cover all of the aftermarket mods. It is just a car but many of us have a personal attachment to our creations and don’t view them as appliances.

Needing to wait the current lead time for a replacement would also suck.
